Lupine
Lupine is grown as an ornamental and is TOXIC - do not eat it. Seeds and foliage of most lupines contain quinolizidine alkaloids poisonous to people, pets, and livestock; some species cause birth defects in grazing animals ('crooked calf disease'). The seeds and pods are the most dangerous parts and can tempt children who mistake them for peas - keep them away. Edible 'lupini beans' come from specially bred, de-bittered crop lupines, NOT these wild species. It also fixes nitrogen as a legume.
Overview
The blue-and-purple pea-flowered wildflower that paints Texas and the desert Southwest each spring (the Texas bluebonnet is one of them) - a beautiful, soil-enriching, pollinator-friendly native, but one whose seeds and foliage are toxic, so it's grown for its flowers, never for food.
Lupine (Lupinus) is one of the most beloved and recognizable wildflowers of North America — the plant behind the Texas bluebonnet and the sheets of blue and purple that wash over Texas roadsides and Southwestern deserts each spring. A large genus of some 200 species, heavily concentrated in the West, lupines bear distinctive hand-shaped (palmate) leaves and dense spikes of pea-family flowers in blue, purple, white, pink, and (in garden hybrids) nearly every color. Featured desert species like Arizona and desert lupine, and the Texas bluebonnet, are cool-season annuals that carpet the ground after winter rains.
They are more than pretty: as legumes they fix nitrogen, enriching lean soil, and their flowers are excellent for bumblebees and other pollinators. But lupines come with a real caution — their seeds and foliage are toxic, containing alkaloids poisonous to people, pets, and livestock (some species even cause birth defects in grazing animals), and the pea-like seeds can tempt children. The first trick is the seed: lupine seeds have a hard, water-resistant coat and germinate poorly unless scarified (nicked, sanded, or soaked overnight in warm water) before sowing. They form a taproot and resent transplanting, so direct sowing is much preferred — sow scarified seed in fall for winter-annual desert and Texas species (bluebonnet, Arizona lupine) so they grow as a cool-season rosette and bloom in spring, or in spring for cooler climates and perennial species. A Rhizobium inoculant helps the young legumes fix nitrogen.

History
An ancient and iconic legume genus - crop lupines fed and enriched soils across the old world, while in North America wild lupines became beloved wildflowers, the Texas bluebonnet a celebrated state flower, even as their toxicity to livestock made them a noted range plant.
Lupines have a long and dual history. In the Old World, crop lupines were grown for millennia around the Mediterranean and beyond as both a soil-enriching green manure and, after laborious de-bittering, a protein-rich food (the lupini bean), valued precisely because, as legumes, they fix nitrogen and thrive on poor soils. That agricultural tradition continues today with low-alkaloid 'sweet' lupine varieties bred for food and fodder.
In North America, wild lupines took a different path into culture: as beloved wildflowers. None is more celebrated than the Texas bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis and its relatives), the Texas state flower, whose spring carpets are a regional icon and the subject of festivals, highway plantings, and countless photographs; the desert Southwest has its own dazzling displays of Arizona and desert lupines after wet winters. At the same time, ranchers long knew lupines as a toxic range plant, recording poisonings and the notorious 'crooked calf disease' (birth defects in calves whose mothers grazed certain lupines at the wrong time). Troubleshooting
