Horse Chestnut
Not food, and NOT a sweet chestnut. Seeds (conkers), leaves, flowers and bark contain aesculin and saponins: eating them brings throat burning, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea, and in quantity weakness, dilated pupils and collapse. Dogs are the usual casualty, and a swallowed conker can also block the gut. Handling is safe; eating is not. Field test: thick sparse spikes on the husk and one round glossy seed means horse chestnut, poisonous. Any ingestion - call poison control or a vet at once.
Overview
The great white-candled park tree of European avenues - and the source of one of the most reliable poisonings of the year, because its glossy conkers are mistaken for sweet chestnuts. The husk settles it in one second: thick sparse spikes and one round seed means poison.
Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is the broad, heavy-limbed tree that lifts upright white flower “candles” above dinner-plate leaves in May and drops glossy brown conkers in September. It is one of the most widely planted ornamental trees in the temperate world, and it is genuinely magnificent — 60 to 80 feet tall, nearly as wide, casting the densest shade of any common tree.
Its seeds are not chestnuts, and they are poisonous. This is the single reason this page exists. Conkers contain aesculin and saponins; eaten raw they burn the mouth and throat and bring vomiting, cramping and diarrhea, and in quantity weakness, dilated pupils and collapse. Sweet chestnut (Castanea) is an unrelated tree in a different family whose nuts are a real and excellent food. Every autumn people get these two confused — and dogs get them confused far more often than people do.
Standing under a tree with nuts on the ground, here is how to tell:
- The husk. Horse chestnut: a thick, leathery green case with short, thick, widely spaced spikes you can press flat with a thumb. Sweet chestnut: a dense hedgehog burr of fine, needle-sharp spines, packed so tightly you cannot pick it up bare-handed.
- What is inside. Horse chestnut: usually ONE large, round, very glossy seed with a pale rough patch on one side. Sweet chestnut: two or three smaller nuts, flattened where they pressed against each other, each drawn up to a point with a small tassel at the tip.
- The leaves. Horse chestnut: palmately compound — five to seven big leaflets radiating from the end of one stalk like fingers from a palm, carried in opposite pairs. Sweet chestnut: simple single leaves, long and lance-shaped with sharp saw teeth, arranged alternately along the twig.
- The flowers. Horse chestnut: upright white candles in May. Sweet chestnut: long drooping cream catkins in late June and July, with a heavy, unmistakable smell.
If you can only check one thing, check the husk. Thick sparse spikes and one round shiny seed: do not eat, and do not let the dog carry it home.
The second thing to know is the size. This is a tree for a park, a village green or a long drive — not a suburban lot. It is planted fifteen feet from a house constantly, and twenty years later it is lifting the paving, filling the gutters, shading the whole garden and dropping heavy limbs over the roof. Give it 35 feet of clear room in every direction or plant something else.

Measure the distance before you dig the holeThis is the decision that cannot be undone. A horse chestnut reaches 60-80 feet tall and 50-70 feet wide, with heavy low branches and shallow spreading roots. Give it at least 35 feet of clear space in every direction - from the house, the drive, the sidewalk, the septic field and the property line. Almost every unhappy horse chestnut in a garden was planted too close to something, and the only remedy at that point is removal.

Conker Poisoning (Aesculin & Saponins) High
The defining hazard of the tree, and not a disease. Seeds, leaves, flowers, bark and twigs all contain aesculin - a hydroxycoumarin glycoside - together with saponins. Eating them causes burning of the mouth and throat, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and in larger amounts weakness, incoordination, dilated pupils, twitching and collapse. The risk peaks in September to November, when the conkers fall and are mistaken for sweet chestnuts. Dogs are by far the commonest casualty: they pick fallen conkers up on walks, and beyond the toxins, a whole conker is a large hard object that can obstruct the intestine and require surgery. Grazing livestock are poisoned by fallen seeds and by wilted foliage. Handling conkers is entirely safe - the danger is only in eating them.
Watch for: Fallen conkers within reach of toddlers, dogs or livestock; a bowl of conkers kept indoors for the tradition on a low table; anyone gathering nuts under the tree in the belief they are chestnuts. In a dog: drooling, retching, repeated vomiting, tremors, wobbliness and a tense painful abdomen. In a person: mouth and throat burning, vomiting, cramps and diarrhea.
Prevent: Teach the husk test to everyone who uses the space - thick leathery case with short widely spaced spikes and usually ONE round glossy seed is horse chestnut and poisonous; a dense hedgehog burr of fine spines holding two or three flattened pointed nuts is sweet chestnut and edible cooked. Rake fallen conkers up weekly through the drop and bin them, not into compost or a hedge bottom. Leash dogs under the tree in autumn. For a garden where children or animals play, plant the sterile cultivar 'Baumannii', which sets no fruit at all.
Treat: Any suspected ingestion is urgent - call poison control, or your veterinarian or an animal poison line for an animal, IMMEDIATELY and do not wait for symptoms. Take a conker or a leaf with you. Do not try to induce vomiting unless you are told to. For a dog, mention that a whole conker may also be a physical obstruction, since that changes what the vet looks for. There is no home method - boiling, roasting or soaking - that makes conkers safe to eat.
Horse Chestnut Leaf Blotch Medium
A fungal disease (Guignardia aesculi) that is the usual reason a horse chestnut looks scorched by August. Reddish-brown blotches with a yellow halo appear from midsummer, usually starting at the leaflet edges and spreading inward until whole leaves look burnt and drop early. It is disfiguring and almost entirely cosmetic: the tree has already done most of its growing for the year by the time symptoms are heavy, and it leafs out normally the following spring. Wet, humid summers make it worse, and it is severe most years in the humid eastern United States, which is one reason horse chestnut is a poor choice south of zone 7.
Watch for: Irregular reddish-brown patches ringed with yellow, appearing from June and spreading in from the leaflet margins; whole leaflets going papery brown and falling from July onward, with the tree substantially bare by early September.
Prevent: Rake up and remove the fallen leaves every autumn - the fungus overwinters in them and re-infects the canopy from the ground, so leaf sanitation is the one control that works on a large tree. Plant with generous spacing for airflow, and if you are choosing a tree now, the red horsechestnut hybrids ('Fort McNair' especially) are markedly more resistant.
Treat: None is needed or practical. Spraying a 70-foot canopy is not feasible and the damage is cosmetic. Keep the tree watered in drought so blotch is not compounded by scorch, and clear the fallen leaves to reduce next year's starting inoculum.
Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner Medium
A tiny moth (Cameraria ohridella) whose larvae tunnel inside the leaf tissue, producing pale wandering mines that turn brown and merge until the whole canopy looks burnt by midsummer. Several generations run through a season, so damage builds year on year. IMPORTANT GEOGRAPHY: this insect is a European problem. First described near Lake Ohrid in North Macedonia in 1985, it has swept across Europe and disfigures most horse chestnuts there - but it is NOT established in North America. If you are in the US and your tree is browning, the cause is almost certainly leaf blotch, drought scorch or Japanese beetle, not this moth. Even in Europe it is disfiguring rather than lethal; trees leaf out normally the next spring.
Watch for: Small pale blotch-shaped mines between the leaf veins from late spring, each turning reddish-brown and eventually merging so the leaflet looks scorched; hold a leaf to the light and the mine is a hollow blister with the larva or its frass visible inside. Mines are inside the leaf - surface fungal blotches with yellow halos are a different problem.
Prevent: Rake up and destroy fallen leaves in autumn, where the pupae overwinter; this is the only measure that helps a garden tree, and it works better if neighbouring trees are cleared too. Pheromone traps monitor the moth but do not control it. In North America there is nothing to prevent - the insect is not present.
Treat: No practical treatment for a mature tree, and none warranted: the damage is cosmetic and the tree recovers each spring. Keep it watered so miner damage is not compounded by drought stress. Injected treatments exist for high-value specimens in Europe and are an arborist's decision, not a garden one.
Bleeding Canker Medium
Dark rusty-brown or black liquid weeping from patches on the trunk and main limbs, drying to a tarry stain. Two causes are involved: a bacterium (Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi), which drove a serious epidemic across Britain from the mid-2000s, and Phytophthora species, which cause a similar bleeding at the stem base. Many affected trees live with small stable cankers for decades and are in no danger. The cases that matter are those where cankers expand and girdle the trunk, with the crown thinning and dying back above them - and the practical risk there is structural failure of a very large tree, not the disease itself.
Watch for: Rusty or black weeping patches on the bark, most visible in spring and easiest to spot in winter when the tree is bare; cracked or sunken bark around them; and above all whether the crown directly above a canker is thinning, dying back or dropping limbs.
Prevent: There is nothing to spray and no resistant stock to buy. Reduce stress instead: water in drought, mulch the root zone, avoid compacting or excavating the soil over the roots, and never wound the trunk with mowers or trimmers. Clean pruning tools between trees, and prune in dry weather in the dormant season.
Treat: No cure exists. Do not cut into or scrape a canker to see how deep it goes - that spreads it and injures the tree. Record the size of the patches with a photograph and compare year to year. Get an arborist to assess the tree if the cankers are enlarging, girdling the trunk, or accompanied by crown dieback; that assessment is about whether a large tree near a building or a path is still safe to keep.
Outgrowing Its Site (Shade, Roots & Litter) Medium
The commonest real problem with this tree is not a pest but arithmetic. Horse chestnut is routinely planted on a suburban lot at the size of a broom handle and reaches 60-80 feet tall and 50-70 feet wide, on shallow roots that spread well past the canopy. Twenty years on it casts the deepest shade of any common garden tree so nothing grows beneath it, its surface roots lift paving and drives and take all the water from nearby beds, it fills gutters with very large leaves, it drops thousands of poisonous conkers onto paths, and its brittle wood sheds heavy limbs in storms. Shallow-rooted and top-heavy, it is also among the trees most likely to blow over in saturated ground.
Watch for: Paving, kerbs or a drive beginning to lift; grass thinning to bare soil under the canopy; nearby beds drying out unusually fast; heavy limbs extending over a roof, a drive or a play area; a trunk closer than 35 feet to a building or a septic field.
Prevent: This one is solved entirely before planting: pace 35 feet from the spot in every direction and check what is inside that circle - house, drive, sidewalk, septic field, power lines, boundary. If anything is, choose a different tree, or a red horsechestnut hybrid at 30-40 feet, or plant the horse chestnut where a park-sized tree genuinely belongs. Prune low limbs while the tree is young and easy to reach.
Treat: There is no good late fix. Cutting major surface roots to save paving destabilises a very large tree, and topping it produces weak crowded regrowth that is more dangerous than what it replaced. Have an arborist reduce or thin the crown to manage limb risk, mulch or plant shade-tolerant woodlanders instead of fighting for lawn, and accept that removal is sometimes the honest answer for a tree planted in the wrong place.

The form to plant if you want this tree in a place people use. 'Baumannii' carries fully double white flowers that last noticeably longer than the species', and it is completely STERILE - it sets no fruit at all. No conkers means no poisoning risk for children, dogs or livestock, no thousands of seeds to rake, no slip hazard on paths and drives, and no seedlings in the borders. It is the same 60-80 foot tree in every other respect, so the space rule still applies, and the leaves still brown in late summer. Grafted, so it cannot be raised from seed.

A different plant, listed for comparison: a hybrid of horse chestnut with the American red buckeye. It is much smaller - roughly 30-40 feet - with deep pink to red flower candles, better resistance to leaf blotch and scorch, and far fewer fruit. The seeds it does set are just as poisonous. Its size, spacing and disease behaviour all differ from this page's, so use a red horsechestnut guide rather than running one off the horse chestnut timeline. Often the better choice for a large garden that cannot take an 80-foot tree.
Grow
Full sun, deep moist well-drained soil, cool summers, and above all space - 35 feet clear in every direction. If you want the tree without the poisonous crop, plant the sterile double-flowered 'Baumannii', which sets no conkers at all.
Horse chestnut is undemanding about everything except room and moisture. Give it full sun, deep, moist, well-drained soil, and a site that does not bake. It is hardy through zones 3 to 7, is happiest where summers are cool, and struggles badly in the heat and humidity of the South — see Climate.
Space is the whole decision. Mature dimensions are 60-80 feet tall by 50-70 feet wide, on shallow roots that spread well beyond the canopy. Before digging, pace out 35 feet from the planting spot toward the house, the drive, the sidewalk, the septic field, the power lines and the neighbour's fence. If any of those falls inside the circle, this is the wrong tree for that spot — and the wrong tree in the wrong place cannot be fixed later by pruning. Nothing grows well underneath it either: the shade is dense and the surface roots take all the water, so plan on mulch, or shade-tolerant woodlanders, rather than lawn.
The variety choice that removes the hazard. If you want the flowers and the shade but not the poisonous crop, plant 'Baumannii'. It is a double-flowered form that is sterile and sets no fruit at all — no conkers to rake, no conkers for a dog to find, no slip hazard on the drive, and a longer-lasting flower display into the bargain. For a smaller garden, the hybrid red horsechestnut (Aesculus × carnea) tops out nearer 35-40 feet with red flowers and sets far fewer fruit — though the fruit it does set is just as toxic.
Plant a young tree rather than a big one: horse chestnut makes a deep initial root and moves badly once it is large. Water deeply through the first three summers, mulch wide, and keep grass and mowers away from the trunk. After that it needs almost nothing except an occasional soaking in a serious drought.
Care
Very little to do for eleven months of the year - water in drought, rake the leaves to slow leaf blotch, prune structurally in late winter. Then the autumn job that actually matters: raking up and binning the conkers before a dog or a child finds them.
An established horse chestnut is a low-maintenance tree. The routine is short: soak it in a long drought (it has no drought tolerance and browns early without it), rake up the fallen leaves in autumn so that leaf blotch has less to re-infect from, and do any structural pruning in late winter — dead, crossing, or heavy low limbs. Anything big or over a building goes to an arborist; the wood is brittle and the limbs are heavier than they look.
The care job that carries real weight is the conker rake. From September a mature tree drops thousands of seeds. Rake them up weekly through the drop and put them in the trash — not in compost that animals visit, and not swept into the hedge bottom where a dog will nose them out in November. That one chore removes the poisoning risk, the slip hazard on paths and drives, and next June's crop of seedlings all at once.
Expect the tree to look tired by late summer. Brown, curling, prematurely falling leaves in August are normal for this species and almost always cosmetic — leaf blotch, drought scorch, or beetle feeding rather than anything fatal. A horse chestnut has usually finished its year by early September, and it will come back fully next spring. What is not routine is dark rusty ooze on the trunk with dieback in the crown above it; that combination is worth an arborist's opinion.
Do not feed it. A mature shade tree on ordinary soil needs no fertilizer, and pushing soft growth on a brittle-wooded tree is actively unhelpful.
Troubleshooting
Somebody ate a conker - that is an emergency, and it comes first. After that: which nut is this, why the leaves brown every August, what the rusty ooze on the trunk means, and why the tree has no flowers yet.
A child, a pet or livestock has eaten a conker, a leaf or a flower. Call poison control (or your veterinarian, or an animal poison line for an animal) immediately — do not wait for symptoms to appear. Take a conker or a leaf with you if you go in. For a dog there are two separate problems: the aesculin and saponins cause vomiting, drooling, tremors and abdominal pain, and the conker itself is a large hard object that can block the intestine and need surgery. Vomiting that will not stop, wobbliness, or a swollen painful belly means go now.
“I found nuts under a tree — which one is this?” Look at the husk first. Thick leathery green case, short thick spikes set well apart, usually one big round glossy seed inside: horse chestnut, poisonous. Dense hedgehog burr of fine needle-like spines holding two or three flattened, pointed nuts: sweet chestnut, edible once cooked. Then check the leaves overhead — horse chestnut's are palmately compound, like fingers from a palm; sweet chestnut's are single, long and saw-toothed. If any part of the check is ambiguous, treat it as horse chestnut.
“Can I make conkers safe by boiling, roasting or soaking them?” No. Do not try. Some cultures historically leached related Aesculus species through days of pounding, running water and ash as a famine food, and the process is exacting and easy to get wrong. There is no home method for horse chestnut, and no reason to want one.
The leaves go brown and drop from July onward, every year. Normal for this tree, and almost always cosmetic. Reddish-brown blotches with a yellow halo spreading in from the leaflet edges is leaf blotch; crisp brown margins on a hot dry site is drought scorch; leaves eaten to lace between the veins with metallic beetles present is Japanese beetle. Rake and bin the fallen leaves, water in drought, and accept that a mature horse chestnut finishes its season early.
Dark rusty or black liquid weeping down the trunk. Bleeding canker. Many trees carry small cankers for decades. Get an arborist's opinion if the patches are spreading, if they are girdling the trunk, or if the crown above is thinning and dying back — the risk is structural failure, not the disease itself.
No flowers yet. Time. A seed-grown horse chestnut takes something like 10 to 20 years to bloom; a grafted nursery tree is quicker. Heavy shade delays it further.
The roots are lifting the paving and nothing will grow under it. Both are permanent features of a mature horse chestnut, not problems to be solved. Cutting major surface roots destabilises the tree. Mulch the area or plant shade-tolerant woodlanders, and treat it as a lesson about the 35-foot rule for the next tree.
“Do conkers keep spiders out of the house?” No. It is a persistent piece of folklore with no evidence behind it. If you keep a bowl of them indoors for the tradition, keep it out of reach of toddlers and pets.

Horse chestnut seed extract is a real, evidence-backed treatment for chronic venous insufficiency - and it is a standardised pharmaceutical preparation, made under assay with the toxic aesculin removed. Nothing you can make from a conker at home resembles it.

Horse chestnut is one of the few plants in this catalog whose traditional medicinal use survived scientific testing. Horse chestnut seed extract is used for chronic venous insufficiency — the aching, heavy, swollen legs and varicose veins caused by leg veins that no longer return blood efficiently. A Cochrane systematic review found short-term evidence that it reduces leg pain, swelling and itching, and it is a licensed medicine in parts of Europe. The active constituent is aescin (escin), a mixture of triterpene saponins that appears to reduce capillary leakiness.
The part that matters for a garden page is how that extract is made. It is not conkers. A pharmaceutical horse chestnut seed extract is produced under controlled extraction, assayed and standardised to a fixed aescin content (typically 16-20 percent, calculated as anhydrous escin), and processed so that aesculin — the hydroxycoumarin that is the main acute toxin — is removed or reduced to trace levels. Every one of those steps exists because the raw seed is poisonous.
So there is no home preparation of horse chestnut. No tea, no tincture, no decoction, no poultice, no ground-up conker in a capsule. A conker is a raw seed carrying its full load of aesculin and saponins, in a concentration that varies with the tree, the season and the individual seed. Making a preparation at home does not give you a weak version of the medicine; it gives you an unmeasured dose of the poison the medicine was purified away from.
Even the standardised product is a real drug with real cautions: it interacts with anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines, it is not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is avoided in kidney or liver disease. It belongs in a conversation with a doctor or pharmacist, not in the kitchen. Grow the tree for its candles and its shade.
Propagation & seed saving
Fresh conkers sown in autumn germinate readily - they need winter cold and must never be allowed to dry out. Named forms including the sterile 'Baumannii' are grafted, so they cannot be raised from seed.
Planting a conker is one of the classic childhood garden experiments, and it works. The seed is recalcitrant — it dies if it dries out — so collect conkers as they fall, keep them cool and slightly damp, and sow them within a few weeks. They also need a winter's cold to break dormancy, so autumn sowing outdoors does the job for free.
Push each conker about 2 inches deep, either into a deep pot of gritty compost or straight into the ground where the tree is to stand, and cover the spot with wire mesh because squirrels will dig them out otherwise. Shoots appear the following spring. Horse chestnut makes a strong tap root early, so either sow in place or move the seedling in its first year or two — an older seedling transplants badly.
Two honest cautions. First, a seedling grows into a 60-to-80-foot tree, so plant it where that is welcome or give it away as a young tree; a conker sprouted in a yogurt pot on a windowsill is a twenty-year commitment. Second, keep the collecting bowl out of reach of small children and pets while you work — handling conkers is entirely safe, but a bowlful sitting on a low table over autumn is exactly how a poisoning happens.
Named cultivars cannot be raised this way. 'Baumannii' is sterile and produces no seed at all, and the red horsechestnut hybrids do not come true, so both are budded or grafted onto seedling rootstock — which is why you buy them as nursery trees rather than growing them yourself.
History
A rare Balkan mountain tree that Europe adopted as its favourite avenue tree, gave a children's game, and stripped for war chemicals - and which is Vulnerable in the wild while being planted by the million everywhere else.
For a tree this familiar, horse chestnut has an oddly small homeland: a scatter of mountain valleys in the Balkans — northern Greece, Albania, North Macedonia and Bulgaria. Those wild populations are small and declining, and the species is assessed as Vulnerable in its native range even while it is planted by the million across Europe and North America.
It reached western Europe through Constantinople: the botanist Carolus Clusius received seed in Vienna in 1576, and within a century the tree was the fashionable choice for grand avenues from Paris to London. The name came with it. The Turkish at kestanesi — horse chestnut — refers to feeding the seeds to horses for coughs and broken wind; the other explanation on offer is the horseshoe-shaped leaf scar on the winter twig, complete with a curve of dots like nail holes. Both stories are old, and nobody has settled it.
Then there are conkers. The game — a seed on a string, taking turns to strike your opponent's — is first clearly recorded on the Isle of Wight in 1848; earlier versions were played with snail shells and hazelnuts, and the name probably descends from conquerors. It is one of the very few things generations of children have done with an inedible poisonous seed, and it is perfectly safe, because the game involves no eating.
The strangest chapter is the First World War. Britain needed acetone to make cordite, and Chaim Weizmann's bacterial fermentation process could produce it from starch. Grain was too precious, so in 1917 schoolchildren across Britain were sent out to collect conkers by the ton. Much of the harvest rotted at railway stations before it could be processed, and the scheme was quietly abandoned — but for one autumn the country's playgrounds were a strategic resource.
The tree's most affecting modern story is a single specimen. The horse chestnut Anne Frank could see from the annexe window in Amsterdam, and wrote about three times in her diary, stood until a storm brought it down in 2010. Saplings grown from its conkers have since been planted at sites around the world.
Growing across climates
A cool-summer tree. Superb in zones 4-6, workable in 7 with moisture and shade from afternoon sun, and a poor choice from zone 7b southward, where heat, humidity and drought leave it brown by midsummer every year.
Zones 3-4: fully hardy — the wood tolerates roughly -35°F. Growth is slower and the tree is smaller at the cold edge, and late spring frosts occasionally brown the opening flower candles, which is cosmetic. Give it the shelter of a building or a windbreak in the coldest, most exposed sites.
Zones 5-6: the sweet spot, and the climate the tree evolved for. Cool summers, reliable rain and deep soil give the best growth, the fullest canopy and the least leaf scorch. This is where horse chestnut earns its reputation as an avenue tree.
Zone 7: workable, with conditions. It needs consistently moist, deep soil and does much better with some afternoon shade and shelter from reflected heat. Expect leaf blotch and scorch to arrive earlier each summer and the tree to be brown by August most years.
Zone 7b and warmer: not recommended. Hot, humid summers give heavy annual leaf blotch, and hot dry ones give scorch; the tree spends half of every growing season looking dead and is short-lived and stressed. If you are in the South and want this look, plant the native red buckeye (a small hummingbird tree for the understory) or the native bottlebrush buckeye instead — both are adapted to the heat, though both are also toxic-seeded.
Two climate notes that apply everywhere. Horse chestnut has no meaningful drought tolerance, so a hot dry site or a compacted street verge shortens its life and guarantees an ugly August. And its shallow roots make it vulnerable in high winds and saturated ground — another reason for the 35-foot rule around buildings.
