Grown from a corm planted in spring, they're prized above all as a cut flower, a staple of summer bouquets and county-fair arrangements.

Two things define growing them. First, the classic succession trick: because each corm sends up its spike and is essentially done, you plant a fresh batch every two weeks from spring into early summer, so blooms keep coming all season instead of arriving in one short burst.
