Field Bindweed
Field bindweed is not a food plant - do not eat it. Its foliage and seed carry tropane alkaloids; horses that graze it in quantity can develop colic and lasting gut damage, and it is not safe fodder for other livestock. The risks to you are indirect: never compost it or move soil from an infested bed, because root fragments resprout. If you use a herbicide, choose a product whose label lists your site - lawn, vegetable garden, pasture - and follow that label, which is legally binding.
Overview
The twining, arrowhead-leaved weed with small white-pink morning-glory flowers - and a root system 10 to 20 feet deep that laughs at digging. It is a listed noxious weed in most western and plains states, and beating it takes three to five seasons of patience, not one weekend.
Field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) is the weed most gardeners meet as a thin, wiry vine with arrowhead-shaped leaves and pretty little white or pale-pink funnel flowers that look exactly like miniature morning glories — because they are close relatives. It twines up tomato cages, corn, roses, and fences, sprawls flat across lawns and paths, and reappears every spring no matter what you did to it last year.
What makes it different from almost every other garden weed is what you cannot see. A mature bindweed plant has a vertical root reaching 10 to 20 feet down, with lateral roots running sideways for several yards, and buds all along them that can each send up a new shoot. Pull the top and you have removed a leaf; the plant is untouched. Rototill the bed and you have cut the roots into hundreds of cuttings and planted them all — a fragment two inches long can start a new plant. Its seed, meanwhile, stays alive in the soil for decades.

Field bindweed's control problem is entirely below ground. A mature plant has a vertical root reaching 10-20 feet with laterals running several yards sideways, studded with buds that each produce a shoot. Removing top growth removes almost none of the plant, and late-season sugars stored in that system fund a fast, repeated emergence the following spring.
Watch for: Shoots reappearing within two to three weeks of every removal; shoots emerging in a line, which traces a lateral root beneath the surface; a patch that looks gone in spring and is back by June.
Prevent: Kill seedlings in their first three to four weeks, before they can regenerate from root. Keep ground covered and shaded so new plants never establish, and never move soil from an infested area.
Treat: Starve the roots: sever every shoot flush with the soil every two to three weeks through the whole season for three to five consecutive years, with no gaps. Combine with heavy mulch or opaque fabric left down at least three seasons, and dense competing cover. Where herbicide is appropriate, apply a systemic product at full bloom or in early fall when sugars move downward, using a product whose label lists your site and following that label exactly.
Rototilling is the worst thing you can do to a bindweed patch - it turns the root system into hundreds of cuttings and plants them across the bed.
Regrowth from Root Fragments High
A root piece as short as two inches will produce a new plant. Tilling, digging, moving topsoil, sharing perennial divisions, and unwashed equipment therefore spread field bindweed efficiently, and are the main way a patch reaches a clean garden or a new property.
Watch for: New patches appearing exactly where soil was moved, where a bed was tilled, or where a division was planted; bindweed shoots coming up inside a newly delivered load of topsoil or compost.
Prevent: Never rototill an infested bed. Never compost bindweed. Keep soil, tools, and boots from an infested area out of clean ground, and do not pass on divisions lifted from a bindweed patch.
Treat: Bag removed material for disposal, or dry it to a crisp on pavement first. Clean tillage and digging tools before moving to clean ground, and watch any newly disturbed area for a full season.
Decades-Long Seed Bank Medium
Each plant produces a few hundred hard-coated seeds, and buried-seed trials have recovered viable field bindweed seed after 20 years and longer. This is why an apparently cleared area produces a trickle of new seedlings for many years, and why control has to include a permanent low-level watch rather than ending at eradication.
Watch for: Small arrowhead-leaved seedlings appearing in a bed you thought was clear, especially after cultivation brings buried seed to the surface.
Prevent: Cut or pull flowering stems before the round capsules dry and split, so you stop adding to the bank. Keep soil covered - buried seed needs light and warmth near the surface to germinate.
Treat: Hoe seedlings out within their first three to four weeks, while they can still be killed outright; after about a month they can regenerate from root and become a long-term problem.
Tropane Alkaloids (livestock risk) Medium
Field bindweed foliage and seed contain tropane alkaloids. Horses are the most sensitive: sustained grazing or contaminated hay has been associated with colic, intestinal thickening, weight loss, and lasting digestive damage. It is not a hazard to handle, and it is not a human food.
Watch for: Bindweed established in pasture, or twining through a hay field where it will be baled in with the crop.
Prevent: Keep bindweed out of hay ground and paddocks, and inspect purchased hay. Do not offer pulled bindweed to animals as green feed.
Treat: Remove animals from a heavily infested pasture and consult a veterinarian if a horse shows recurring colic or unexplained weight loss where bindweed is abundant.
Noxious-Weed Listing Medium
Field bindweed is listed as a noxious weed by most western and plains states, and by many others - it is one of the most widely listed weeds in the country. Listing can carry duties to control it on land you own, and restrictions on selling or moving contaminated seed, hay, soil, or nursery stock. Check your own state and county list, since listing is what creates any obligation.
Watch for: Bindweed in hay, crop seed, nursery containers, or delivered topsoil - the routes that state rules are written to interrupt.
Prevent: Buy certified weed-free seed, hay, and topsoil where that is available; do not sell or give away plants, soil, or hay from an infested area.
Treat: Follow your state or county weed authority's control requirements, and contact your local extension or weed district for the control programs and any biological-control agents available in your area.

It is aggressive in moist, rich ground but has a shallower root system than field bindweed, so it is easier to dig out. Some North American forms are native; field bindweed never is.

Grow
How it invades and holds ground: shallow-rooted seedlings establish in bare, dry, sunny soil, then build a root system that goes 10-20 feet down and spreads laterally, storing enough energy to outlast almost anything you do to the top.
You will never plant bindweed, so what matters is how it gets in and why it stays. It arrives as seed — in contaminated topsoil, in hay and straw mulch, in nursery pots, on tillage equipment, and in bird droppings — and germinates in bare, warm, sunny soil. The seedling stage is the only genuinely vulnerable moment in its life: a young bindweed can be hoed out and killed outright, and it needs about three to four weeks of undisturbed growth before it can regenerate from its root.
After that the plant changes character. It sends a taproot straight down — documented to 20 feet and beyond in deep soils, though most of the working root is in the top 2 feet — and throws lateral roots outward that can extend several yards in a season. Those laterals carry adventitious buds, so a single plant can cover a bed with shoots that all look like separate seedlings. Late in the season it pumps sugars down into that system, which is what lets it emerge fast and repeatedly the following spring.
It thrives where other things struggle: full sun, dry soil, poor fertility, compacted ground, and hot pavement edges. Drought that stops your vegetables barely slows it, because it is drinking from a depth nothing else in the bed reaches. It does badly in shade and in dense, vigorous perennial cover — which is the one biological weakness the whole control strategy is built on.
Care
Control means starvation, not removal: cut every shoot flush with the soil every two to three weeks for three to five seasons, smother patches for at least three years, crowd it out with dense cover, and if you spray, spray at full bloom or in early fall.
Everything about bindweed control follows from one fact: you cannot get the roots out. Digging removes a fraction of them and leaves the rest as cuttings. So the goal is to make the root system spend more energy pushing up shoots than those shoots ever send back down.
The cutting cycle. This is the method that actually works, and it is boring. Sever every bindweed shoot at soil level — a sharp hoe, a hori-hori, or shears — the moment it has a few leaves, and repeat every two to three weeks through the whole growing season. Miss a month and the roots refill. Extension research puts the timeline at three to five seasons of consistent cutting to exhaust an established patch, and that is with no gaps.
Smothering. Cardboard topped with 6-8 inches of mulch, or opaque landscape fabric with the edges overlapped by a foot, will finish a patch — but leave it down at least three full growing seasons, and walk the perimeter monthly, because runners will travel sideways and pop up in the clean ground just past the edge.
Competition. Bindweed is a poor competitor in shade. A thick stand of perennial grass, a dense cover crop, or closely spaced vegetables will not kill an established root system, but it suppresses new seedlings and slows regrowth enormously. This is what keeps a cleared bed clear.
If you use herbicide. Systemic products only reach the roots when the plant is moving sugars downward — at full bloom and again in early fall before frost. Spraying spring shoots wastes the product. Choose a product whose label lists the site you are treating (lawn, vegetable garden, pasture, ornamental bed are all different labels), follow the rate and any pre-harvest interval exactly, and be aware that some broadleaf products persist in compost and manure and will damage a garden later. The label is the law, not a suggestion. Even with herbicide, expect repeat treatments over several years — there is no one-shot fix. In some western states, biological controls (the bindweed gall mite Aceria malherbae and the bindweed moth) have been released and can suppress patches; ask your county extension office whether they are available where you are.
Propagation & seed saving
How it propagates itself, and why that dictates your disposal habits: root fragments two inches long make new plants, lateral roots colonize sideways, and seed stays viable in the soil for decades.
Field bindweed reproduces three ways, and each one explains a rule you have to follow.
From root fragments. A piece of root as short as two inches, buried, will produce a new plant. That is why rototilling an infested bed is the worst thing you can do, why you should never compost bindweed, and why moving topsoil, sharing perennial divisions, or lending an unwashed tiller spreads it to new gardens. Dispose of pulled material by bagging it, or by drying it to a crisp on pavement first.
From lateral roots. Horizontal roots travel several yards a season and send up shoots along the way, so a patch expands as a spreading front rather than as scattered seedlings. If you see shoots emerging in a rough line, you are looking at one root beneath them.
From seed. Each plant sets a few hundred hard-coated seeds. Buried-seed studies have recovered viable field bindweed after 20 years and longer, with some estimates far higher. Practically, this means you cannot clear the seed bank — you can only stop feeding it by cutting flowering stems before the capsules dry, and then dealing with the trickle of seedlings each year while they are still small enough to hoe out and kill.
Troubleshooting
Is it bindweed or a lookalike, why pulling and tilling fail, what to do about it in lawn versus vegetable beds, and how long this is actually going to take.
Is this field bindweed or hedge bindweed? Field bindweed has flowers about 1 inch across and two tiny bracts set roughly an inch below the flower on the stalk. Hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium, sometimes called wild morning glory too) is a much bigger plant with 2-3 inch flowers and two large bracts wrapped right around the base of the flower, and leaves whose basal lobes are squared off rather than pointed. Some hedge bindweeds in North America are native; field bindweed never is.
Is it a morning glory instead? Garden morning glories (Ipomoea) are annuals with heart-shaped leaves and showy 2-4 inch flowers, and they die at frost and stay dead. If it has small arrowhead leaves, small flowers, and came back on its own for a third year, it is bindweed.
Is it wild buckwheat? Wild buckwheat (Fallopia convolvulus) is an annual twiner with similar arrowhead leaves but no funnel flowers — just tiny greenish clusters — and a papery sheath (an ocrea) wrapping the stem at each leaf node. Bindweed has no ocrea. Annual means one season of pulling ends it, so the distinction matters.
I pulled it all and it came back thicker. Expected. Pulling snaps the stem near the surface and leaves the root untouched, and any fragments you did tear loose became new plants. Switch to cutting shoots flush with the soil on a two-to-three-week cycle and stop disturbing the root zone.
It is in my lawn. Mowing alone will not remove it, but a thick, well-fed, high-mown lawn suppresses it hard, because bindweed cannot compete in dense shade. Where turf is thin, overseed. For spot treatment, use a broadleaf lawn product whose label lists turf and follow the label.
It is in my vegetable beds. Cutting and mulching, not spraying — most systemic broadleaf herbicides are not labelled for food gardens, and several persist in soil and compost. Build the bed up with cardboard and deep mulch, plant densely, and hand-cut every shoot on schedule.
How long will this take? Honestly: three to five years of consistent work for an established patch, and a permanent low-level watch afterwards because of the seed bank. Anyone promising a one-season fix is selling something.
Is it dangerous? Not to handle. It is not a food plant, and its foliage and seed contain tropane alkaloids — horses that eat quantities of it can develop colic and long-term digestive damage, so keep it out of hay and out of paddocks.
History
A Eurasian weed of grain fields that rode wheat seed into North America in the 1700s-1800s, spread across the plains with mechanized agriculture, and became one of the first plants named on state noxious-weed lists.
Field bindweed has been travelling with cereal farming for a very long time. Native to Europe and western Asia, it was a well-known weed of grain fields in antiquity, and it reached North America as a contaminant in imported crop seed, with records from the eastern colonies in the 1700s and a documented arrival in the wheat country of the West in the 1800s.
Mechanization did the rest. The plows, drills, and combines that opened the Great Plains were superb at cutting bindweed roots into pieces and carrying them across counties, and the plant found dryland wheat country almost perfectly suited to a deep-rooted, drought-proof perennial. By the early twentieth century it was regarded as the most serious weed problem in several western states, and it appeared early on the state noxious-weed lists that most of the West and the plains still maintain, where it remains listed today.
Its ornamental cousins muddy the story a little: gardeners have long grown showy annual morning glories, and the family resemblance is close enough that bindweed still gets excused as a pretty little morning glory by people who have not yet met its roots. It has no history as a food or a crop in North America, and no useful role in a garden.
Growing across climates
Found in essentially every US climate (zones 3-10) and worst where it is hot, dry, and sunny; drought barely touches it because its roots reach water nothing else in the bed can, so control timing shifts with the season length but the method never changes.
Field bindweed grows across virtually the whole country, roughly zones 3 through 10, and there is nowhere in the lower 48 you can assume it will not do well. What changes with climate is how long the fight lasts each year, not what you do.
Dry western and plains states: this is its stronghold, and it is where the noxious-weed listings are concentrated. Deep roots make it effectively drought-proof — in a dry August it will be the greenest thing in the garden, growing while everything around it is stalled. Irrigation-free ground, wheat stubble, and hot gravelly edges are where it dominates.
Humid East and Midwest: still common, but denser vegetation and heavier competition slow it, and it concentrates on cultivated beds, thin lawns, and pavement edges rather than open ground.
Cold northern zones: the top dies hard each winter and the growing season is short, which shortens the cutting season — but the root system overwinters fine at −30°F and simply starts again. A shorter season actually helps you, because fewer weeks of leaf area means fewer chances for the roots to refill.
Warm southern zones: a longer season means more growth flushes, so the two-to-three-week cutting cycle needs to start earlier and run later, and the early-fall systemic treatment window arrives later in the year.
Everywhere, the same rules hold: catch seedlings in their first month, never till an infested bed, cut on a schedule, keep the ground covered and shaded, and give it three to five years.
