Coreopsis
Coreopsis is a safe, non-toxic ornamental and pollinator plant, not a food crop. Some species (notably dyer's coreopsis, C. tinctoria) have a long history as a source of red, orange, and yellow natural dye and a traditional Indigenous tea, but it is grown chiefly for its flowers and wildlife value. No special handling precautions.
Overview
The easiest sunshine in the garden - a tough native daisy that blooms for months on almost no water, feeds pollinators and finches, and asks for little more than sun and deadheading.
Coreopsis, or tickseed, is one of the most rewarding and forgiving native flowers you can grow. Cheerful daisy-like blooms in yellow, gold, orange, pink, and red cover the plants from early summer well into fall - one of the longest bloom seasons of any perennial, especially if you deadhead. It's tough as they come: drought-tolerant, heat-proof, happy in poor soil, ignored by deer, and easy from seed or division.
Behind the easy color is real ecological value. The open flowers are perfect landing pads for bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects, and the seeds (the 'ticks' that give it its name) feed goldfinches into fall. There's a coreopsis for every spot - airy threadleaf types like 'Zagreb' and 'Moonbeam,' big-flowered lance-leaved kinds, and the jewel-toned annual dyer's coreopsis - and nearly all of them thrive on neglect in a sunny, well-drained bed.

Fungal rot of the central crown and rhizome, most common in cold, stagnant, waterlogged conditions during winter dormancy or when dead leaves are left to decay against the crown.

Prevent: Ease off water during dormancy (just damp, not flooded), provide good airflow, remove blackened dead leaves, and avoid burying the crown; do not let a dormant plant sit cold and sodden.

Watch for: White dusty film starting on lower leaves and climbing, leaves yellowing and dropping beneath the blooms.
Prevent: Wide spacing, base (never overhead) watering, full sun and airflow; grow resistant series (Profusion, Zahara) where it recurs every year.
Treat: Remove the worst leaves, improve airflow; potassium bicarbonate, neem, or sulfur sprays slow it. Cutting flowers off healthy upper growth keeps the display going regardless.

Full sun and lean, well-drained soil are all it needs; don't over-water or over-feed, and deadhead to keep the flowers coming for months.
Coreopsis is close to foolproof given its one real requirement: full sun. Give it a sunny spot and average-to-lean, well-drained soil, and it thrives - it actively prefers poor, dry ground to rich, moist soil, which only makes it floppy and leafy at the expense of flowers. It's superb for hot, dry, low-water beds, slopes, and pollinator borders.
Start it from seed (direct-sown at last frost, barely covered since light aids germination) or from transplants and divisions; perennial types often bloom their first year, and the annual dyer's coreopsis blooms the same summer. Once established it needs little water and no real feeding. The single task that matters is deadheading - shearing off spent flowers (or the whole plant back by a third mid-season) keeps it blooming for months instead of stopping to set seed.

There's nothing to store as food. Cut coreopsis holds about a week in fresh water. To save seed, let the last flowers of the season mature into dry seed heads, then collect the small dark 'tickseed' and store it cool and dry - it germinates easily, needing only light and warmth, and often self-sows on its own where it's happy. Perennial clumps overwinter in the ground and return each spring, while the annual dyer's coreopsis perpetuates itself entirely by self-sown seed.
