Overview

The single most important plant for monarch butterflies - their caterpillars eat nothing else - plus fragrant summer flowers that feed every pollinator around; a tough, spreading native for a wild corner.

Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is the monarch plant. Monarch butterflies lay their eggs only on milkweeds, and their caterpillars can eat nothing else - so planting milkweed is the single most effective thing a gardener can do for the monarch, whose populations have crashed largely because milkweed has vanished from the landscape. Its leaves are a caterpillar nursery, and its dusty-pink, powerfully sweet-scented summer flower clusters are a nectar magnet for bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects of every kind.

It's a tough, drought-tolerant native that thrives in poor, sunny ground and asks nothing. The catch is vigor: common milkweed spreads aggressively by deep rhizomes and wind-blown silky seeds, so it's best in a meadow, a wild corner, or a contained bed - for a tidy border, its well-behaved cousins butterfly weed and swamp milkweed do the same monarch job. Every part contains toxic milky sap, so it's grown for wildlife, not the table.

Soil-borne rots that kill yarrow kept in wet, heavy, or poorly drained soil - the main way to lose an otherwise indestructible plant, since yarrow is adapted to dry, lean ground.

Watch for: Wilting, blackening, and collapse despite (or because of) moist soil; soft dark roots; sudden decline after a wet spell or in soggy winter ground.

Prevent: Sharp drainage is everything - lean gritty soil, full sun, minimal water, no rich amendments; raised beds or slopes in wet sites.

Treat: None once the roots rot - remove affected plants, take divisions from healthy outer growth, and replant into far sharper-draining conditions.

Bright yellow, black-legged aphids that cluster densely on milkweed stems, buds, and new growth. Conspicuous but rarely fatal to an established plant - and impossible to spray without also killing monarch eggs and caterpillars.

Watch for: Dense colonies of vivid yellow aphids on stems and flower buds, sticky honeydew and sooty mold, attending ants.

Prevent: Encourage lady beetles and lacewings; a healthy plant tolerates them. Never use insecticide on a monarch host plant.

Treat: Blast off with a jet of water or wipe by hand (check for monarch eggs first), or simply tolerate them - predators usually catch up. Do NOT spray.

Grow

Milkweed is easy where it's happy. Give it full sun and average-to-poor, well-drained soil, and choose a permanent home - it has a deep taproot and rhizomes and hates being moved once established. The easiest way to start it is to sow seed in fall and let winter cold break its dormancy naturally; for spring planting, cold-stratify the seed in the fridge for a month first, or set out young transplants.

The most important rule: never use pesticides on or near it. The whole purpose of milkweed is to host monarch caterpillars and feed pollinators, and insecticides (including many 'organic' sprays) kill them. Don't fertilize either - lean soil keeps it in check. Because it runs, decide up front whether to let it naturalize a patch or contain it with a deep barrier and by pulling stray shoots.

Care

Almost none - just leave it for the monarchs, pull stray shoots to contain the spread, tolerate the aphids, and never spray.

Milkweed is nearly no-care once established. It needs no watering, no feeding, and no staking. The main task is containment: pull up the rhizome shoots that appear around and beyond the clump if you're keeping it in bounds, and clip green seed pods before they split if you don't want it self-sowing.

Expect (and tolerate) two things: monarch caterpillars chewing the leaves - that's success, not damage - and bright-yellow oleander aphids clustering on stems and buds. The aphids look alarming but rarely harm an established plant; blast them off with water or simply leave them, since spraying would kill monarch eggs and caterpillars too. Wear gloves and keep the milky sap away from your eyes whenever you cut the plant. Leave the stalks standing over winter and cut them back in early spring.

Harvest

There's no real 'harvest' - it's grown for monarchs and pollinators. A traditional cooked wild food exists, but only with certain ID, thorough cooking, and never at the caterpillars' expense.

Common milkweed isn't a harvest crop; its value is the monarchs and pollinators it supports, so the goal is to leave it in place and let the wildlife use it. The flowers are a superb nectar source and the leaves a monarch nursery - both worth far more standing than cut.

That said, milkweed does have a genuine wild-food tradition: foragers cook young shoots (under about 8 inches), firm unopened flower-bud clusters, and small immature pods, boiling them in a change or two of water to remove the bitterness. But this comes with hard rules - identify with certainty (it can be confused with toxic look-alikes like dogbane when young), never eat any part raw, and never strip a plant that monarchs are using. Historically the silky seed floss was also collected as stuffing and life-jacket filler. For nearly all gardeners, the right move is to grow milkweed for the butterflies and eat something else.

Storage

Milkweed isn't stored as a food crop. As a tough perennial it 'stores itself' underground - a deep taproot and rhizomes carry it through winter and expand the patch each year - and it self-sows widely when the warty pods dry, split, and release their silk-tufted seeds on the autumn wind.

If you want to save seed, collect pods just as they begin to split, separate the seeds from the silk (a paper bag and a good shake helps), and store them dry and cool; they benefit from cold-stratification before sowing. The silk floss itself has a storage history: it was collected during World War II to stuff life jackets when kapok was unavailable, and is still used as a hypoallergenic pillow and insulation fill.
