Coast live oak is safe to grow, but its leaves are stiff and spine-toothed - wear gloves and eye protection when pruning. Its acorns were a staple Indigenous food but sit in the high-tannin red oak group: never eat them raw, and leach them thoroughly first. Acorns and oak leaves also poison dogs and livestock eaten in bulk. Before pruning or removing an established tree, check local rules - most California cities and counties protect oaks by ordinance, and permits and fines apply.

Overview

California's defining evergreen oak and its single most valuable wildlife tree - a dense, spreading, two-century tree that hosts more caterpillars, and therefore more nesting birds, than anything else you can plant in the state, and lives on winter rain alone.

The coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) is the tree that makes a California hillside look like California. It is a dense, broad, evergreen oak of dark cupped leaves edged with holly-like spines, usually wider than it is tall, often on a short massive trunk with heavy low limbs, and it can stand for two hundred years and more. From Mendocino County down through the Coast Ranges to Baja, it is the shade in the valley, the canopy over the creek, and the silhouette on the ridge.

It is also, by a wide margin, the most valuable wildlife plant a California gardener can grow. Oaks host more species of caterpillars and moths than any other tree in the state — hundreds of them — and those caterpillars are the protein that nesting songbirds raise their young on, so an oak is a bird nursery before it is anything else. Its acorns run the winter economy of acorn woodpeckers, scrub-jays, deer, and woodrats, and were a staple human food across coastal California for thousands of years.

And it asks for nothing. A coast live oak wants no summer water at all once established. The single most important thing to know about this tree is that watering it in summer, or putting a lawn under it, is how most of them are killed in gardens — a tree that survives a decade of drought can be finished by a sprinkler.

      Through its first two or three summers a young oak does need water - but deeply and rarely, roughly every three to four weeks, and applied out at the edge of the root zone rather than against the trunk.       Ground squirrels, gophers, rabbits, and deer all eat young oaks. Sudden Oak Death is caused by Phytophthora ramorum, a water mold introduced to coastal California and Oregon that has killed millions of oaks and tanoaks. It behaves unusually: the plants it kills are mostly not the plants that spread it. California bay laurel, tanoak, and a long list of shrubs carry harmless-looking leaf spots and produce enormous quantities of spores in wet weather; rain then splashes those spores onto the trunks of nearby oaks, where the pathogen forms a canker under the bark that eventually girdles the tree. Trees can be infected for years while looking healthy, then brown out over a few weeks - which is where the name comes from. Bark beetles and a black fungus usually move into a dying tree afterward. Affected California counties are under state and federal quarantine restricting the movement of host plants, wood, and soil.

Watch for: Dark red-brown to black seeping or bleeding patches on the lower trunk, often sticky and running down the bark, with no obvious wound behind them - this is the first and most important sign, and it appears while the canopy still looks normal. Later, fine boring dust in bark crevices from ambrosia beetles, and small black crusty fungal fruiting bodies on the bark. Finally the whole crown turns dull green then brown over a few weeks, usually holding the dead leaves rather than dropping them. On the plants that actually spread it, look for brown leaf-tip blotches on California bay laurel, and shoot dieback on tanoak, rhododendron, camellia, viburnum, and huckleberry.

Prevent: Distance from the spreaders is the main defense. Do not plant California bay laurel near a valued oak, and on an infested property consider removing bay within roughly fifteen feet of an oak trunk - this is the single most effective step. Buy nursery stock of known host shrubs from clean sources, since infected nursery plants have moved the pathogen long distances. Do not move oak or tanoak firewood, wood chips, or soil out of a quarantined county. Clean soil and leaf debris off boots, tools, tires, and dogs before leaving infested woodland, and stay out of wet woods in the rainy season when spores are active. Prune oaks only in the dry season, never in wet weather, and keep trees otherwise unstressed - no summer irrigation, no root-zone disturbance.

Treat: There is no cure for an infected tree, so everything useful is done beforehand. On high-value, uninfected oaks in or near an infested area, a phosphonate treatment - potassium phosphite applied to the trunk with a bark-penetrating surfactant, or injected - boosts the tree's own defenses and is applied preventively, usually in fall before the rains and sometimes again in spring; it protects, it does not rescue. Have any suspected tree diagnosed properly, since several other things cause bleeding cankers. A confirmed infected tree near a target should be assessed for hazard, because it decays and fails fast once dead. Report suspected cases to your county agricultural commissioner or extension office, and keep the wood on site.

Coast live oak is one of the most susceptible species, and this is the leading disease killer of the tree in the coastal counties from Monterey to Humboldt. It matters far less in Southern California and in the interior. If you have both a coast live oak and a California bay laurel close together in that range, the bay is the risk factor to act on.

Armillaria Root Rot (Oak Root Fungus) High DiseaseJun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct

Armillaria mellea, the oak root fungus, lives in the soil of much of California and sits harmlessly on native trees that get the dry summer they evolved for. It becomes lethal when the root zone is kept moist through the warm months - which is exactly what a lawn, a summer-irrigated bed, a leaking line, or a misdirected sprinkler does. The fungus invades the roots and root crown, spreads through the soil along root contacts, and girdles the tree from below, so the visible decline appears years after the cause. It is the leading cause of death of established oaks in California gardens, and the reason the standard advice for anything planted under a native oak is to leave it unwatered. Landscape disturbance compounds it: grading, paving, trenching, and compaction inside the root zone all weaken a tree that then cannot resist.

Watch for: Slow, unexplained decline over several years - thinning crown, smaller and paler leaves, dieback starting at the top and outer branches, and a tree that simply is not as full as it used to be. Honey-colored mushrooms clustered at the base of the trunk or over the roots in fall and winter, which is the fungus fruiting. Peel back the bark at ground level and look for flat white fan-shaped sheets of fungal tissue with a strong mushroom smell, and for black shoestring-like strands running through the soil and over the roots. Loose or sloughing bark at the root crown. A tree that fails suddenly in a storm despite a full canopy, because the anchoring roots were already gone.

Prevent: Keep the root zone dry in summer - this is the whole of it. Put no lawn and no irrigated planting under a native oak; the root zone reaches well past the dripline and lies mostly in the top three feet of soil. Plant only dry-shade species beneath and leave them unwatered once established, water young trees deeply and rarely out at the edge of the root zone rather than at the trunk, and stop entirely by about the fourth year. Check that sprinklers, drip lines, downspouts, and pool backwash are not wetting the area. Do not raise or lower the grade, pave, compact, or trench inside the root zone, and never pile soil or mulch against the trunk. Leave the natural leaf litter in place.

Treat: There is no chemical cure, and by the time symptoms show the roots are already lost, so treatment means removing the cause and buying time. Turn off all irrigation in the root zone immediately and remove the lawn or planting that was being watered. Some arborists excavate soil away from the root crown to expose and dry the collar, which can slow the disease on a valuable tree; this is arborist work, not a weekend job. Relieve every other stress - no pruning beyond deadwood, no disturbance, no fertilizer. Have a declining mature tree assessed for hazard, since Armillaria destroys the anchoring roots and the tree can fail while the crown still looks reasonable. Replant the site only with species known to resist the fungus.

This is the most common way a healthy mature coast live oak is killed in a garden, and the cause is almost always a lawn or an irrigated bed installed under the canopy by a previous owner. A tree that shrugs off a decade of drought can be finished by a sprinkler. If you inherit an oak with lawn beneath it, turning the water off is the most valuable thing you will do for it.

The goldspotted oak borer (Agrilus auroguttatus) is an invasive flatheaded beetle from southeastern Arizona, first found in San Diego County in 2004 and since established across parts of Southern California. It has killed many thousands of oaks. Adults are small, dark, bullet-shaped beetles with several gold spots along each wing cover; the larvae tunnel in the living tissue between bark and wood, and repeated attacks over several years girdle and kill the tree. Coast live oak, California black oak, and canyon live oak are the species it kills. Its long-distance spread is almost entirely human: it travels in infested firewood, which is why every California campground and county now carries a do-not-move-firewood rule. Trees stressed by drought or root damage die faster.

Watch for: Crown thinning and dieback starting in the upper and outer branches and progressing over several years. Small D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across, scattered over the bark of the trunk and larger limbs - the shape is the giveaway, since round holes are other borers. Dark wet staining, weeping, or red-black patches on the bark where larvae are feeding beneath. Heavy woodpecker chipping and flaking of the bark, often the most visible sign from a distance. Adults on the foliage in summer, dark with gold spots. In Southern California, any oak declining from the top down is worth checking for exit holes.

Prevent: Do not move oak firewood - buy it where you burn it and leave what is left behind. This is the single most important rule, and it is how the beetle reaches new areas. If you have wood from a felled oak in an infested county, keep it on site, and if it must be stored, tightly tarp or solarize it or have it chipped small. Keep trees unstressed: no summer irrigation inside the root zone, no root-zone disturbance, and no unnecessary pruning. Inspect valued oaks yearly for exit holes and bark staining, especially in San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties.

Treat: There is no rescue for a heavily infested tree; management is preventive and is arborist work. On high-value oaks in an infested area, systemic and bark-applied insecticide programs are used prophylactically to protect uninfested trees, applied on a schedule around the summer flight period. Have a suspected infestation confirmed and reported to your county agricultural commissioner or UC Cooperative Extension, since detection outside the known range matters. Remove and properly handle dead and dying trees rather than leaving them as a beetle source, keep the wood on site, and never sell or give it away as firewood.

A Southern California problem rather than a statewide one, concentrated in San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties. If you are in that range, the practical takeaway is short: never move oak firewood, and look at your trunk for D-shaped holes once a year.

Tiny gall wasps and mites induce the tree to form bumps, balls, and woolly or spiky growths on leaves and twigs. Diverse and curious but essentially harmless, and part of the oak's rich insect community.

Watch for: Round balls, woolly patches, or bumps on leaves and twigs, each housing a developing insect; sometimes abundant but rarely harmful.

Prevent: None needed - galls rarely harm the tree and support wildlife.

Treat: None warranted; leave them. Heavily galled twigs can be pruned out in the cool season if you object to the look.

California oaks carry an extraordinary variety of them - buttons, spangles, urns, spiky balls, and the pink-and-white apples of the California gall wasp, which was once collected to make ink. They are one of the most interesting things about owning an oak, and none of them needs treating.

California Oakworm Low PestMar, Apr, May, Jun, Oct, Nov

The California oakworm (Phryganidia californica) is a native moth whose caterpillars feed on live oak foliage, and which builds to a visible outbreak every several years before natural enemies and disease crash the population again. Outbreak years can strip a coast live oak nearly bare and cover paths, cars, and patios with caterpillars and frass, which is alarming and messy. It is not, on a healthy tree, a serious threat: oaks refoliate, and defoliation by a native insect is part of the system the tree evolved in. It only becomes a real risk when a tree is already weakened by drought stress, root damage, or disease, and is defoliated repeatedly.

Watch for: Olive-to-dark caterpillars with lengthwise yellow and black stripes and conspicuously large heads, feeding on the leaves in spring and again in fall. Leaves first skeletonized on the underside, then chewed through. Small gray-brown moths fluttering around the tree in numbers. Frass falling steadily onto surfaces below the canopy - usually the first thing people notice. In an outbreak year, a coast live oak stripped to bare twigs by early summer, then pushing new leaves within weeks.

Prevent: Nothing needs to be done in a normal year, and prevention mostly means keeping the tree otherwise unstressed so it can shrug off defoliation - no summer irrigation in the root zone, no root disturbance, no unnecessary pruning. Leave the natural predators and parasitic wasps alone; broad-spectrum sprays remove them and make outbreaks longer, not shorter. Hosing the trunk and lower canopy dislodges caterpillars where they are a nuisance around a patio.

Treat: In almost every case, do nothing and let the tree refoliate. Where a specific tree is genuinely at risk - repeated defoliation on an already declining oak - Btk applied to small early-instar caterpillars is the selective option and spares most other insects, and is best handled by an arborist on a large tree. Do not use a broad-spectrum insecticide on an oak: it kills the parasitic wasps and predators that end the outbreak, along with hundreds of other species the tree exists to feed.

This is the answer to the most common question a coast live oak owner asks - what is eating my oak and covering my patio. The answer is a native moth, the tree recovers, and the right action is almost always none.

Grow

Plant small in fall - or sow an acorn where the tree will stand - into unamended native soil with room for a 60-foot crown, cage it against squirrels and deer, water deeply and rarely for two or three summers, then stop watering forever.

Site it first, because you are choosing for a century. A coast live oak wants full sun to light shade, ground that drains, and a great deal of room — commonly 30 to 60 feet tall and often wider still, with heavy low limbs that reach out over whatever is beneath them. Keep it well clear of houses, pavement, septic lines, and utilities, and picture the tree at eighty years old rather than at planting.

Then plant small, and in fall. Oaks send down a deep taproot and hate being moved, so a one-gallon tree, a bare-root whip, or best of all a fresh acorn sown where the tree will stand will outgrow and outlive a boxed specimen. Sow three or four acorns an inch or two deep and thin to the strongest. Backfill with the native soil you dug out — no compost, no fertilizer, no potting mix — set the root flare slightly proud of the grade, and cage the seedling against ground squirrels, gophers, rabbits, and deer. Keep a weed-free circle several feet across: non-native annual grasses are one of the real reasons California oaks stop regenerating, because they strip the shallow moisture a seedling lives on.

Water deeply and infrequently for the first two or three dry seasons, out at the edge of the root zone rather than at the trunk, and then stop. That is the whole method. Everything else this tree needs, it gets from the winter rain.

Care

The rule that matters is no summer water inside the root zone and no lawn under the tree - summer irrigation invites the root fungus that kills most garden oaks. Beyond that: prune rarely and only in the dry season, check permits first, leave the leaf litter, and never spray.

An established coast live oak needs almost nothing, and almost everything that goes wrong with one is something a person did. The first and largest rule: no summer water inside the root zone, which extends well past the dripline and lies mostly in the top three feet of soil. Warm, moist soil around the crown and roots is precisely the condition that Armillaria mellea — oak root fungus — and the Phytophthora root rots need, and they are the leading cause of death of California oaks in gardens. That means no lawn under an oak, no summer-irrigated bed within the canopy, no sprinkler throwing water at the trunk, and no downspout draining into the root zone. Plant the space beneath with dry-shade natives and leave it unwatered, or leave it as leaf litter.

The second rule is to leave the ground alone. Do not raise or lower the grade, pave, compact, or trench inside the root zone; oaks are extraordinarily sensitive to it and decline slowly over years afterward, so the damage rarely gets connected to the cause. Leave the fallen leaf litter where it is under the canopy: it is the mulch this tree evolved with, and it shelters the pupating stages of the insects the tree feeds.

Prune as little as you can. In California the timing is the reverse of the eastern rule — prune in the dry season, roughly midsummer through early fall, and never in wet weather, because the Phytophthora diseases that kill California oaks travel in rain. Take deadwood and structural problems only, never top a tree, and remove only a small fraction of a mature canopy at once. Harvest

Acorns arrive after about 15-25 years and drop each fall. They are a genuine traditional food after thorough leaching - and, being a red-oak-group acorn, more tannic than a white oak's - but most are best left as the wildlife feast they run.

A coast live oak starts bearing acorns at roughly fifteen to twenty-five years old and then drops them each fall, heavily in periodic mast years and lightly between. They are slender and pointed, and unlike most of the red oak group they mature in a single season rather than two.

They are a real food, and were the staple food of coastal California for thousands of years. They are also bitter and inedible until leached. Because coast live oak belongs to the red oak group, its acorns carry more tannin than a white oak’s and take more work: gather sound acorns in fall, float-test and discard the floaters (those are weevilled), shell them, and then leach until no bitterness remains at all — taste is the test, not a fixed number of rinses. Cold-leaching, in repeated changes of cold water over days or in a running stream, is the method if you want flour, because boiling gelatinizes the starch and hot-leached meal will never bind. Hot-leaching, through several changes of boiling water, is for chopped nutmeat to eat as it is. Either way, move the acorns into fresh water each time rather than pouring water over them, so the tannin you drew out does not go back in. Never eat them raw.

For most people the honest answer is to leave them. The fall acorn drop is the year’s main event for acorn woodpeckers, scrub-jays, band-tailed pigeons, deer, and woodrats, and watching a granary tree work is a better return than flour.

Storage

Leached acorn flour keeps like any flour and is best frozen. For planting, coast live oak acorns cannot be dried - they germinate with the first rains and must be sown fresh or held briefly in moist cool storage.

For food, leached and dried acorns keep for months in a cool dry place, and the ground meal stores like any flour — best in the freezer, since the oils go rancid at room temperature.

For planting, acorns behave nothing like ordinary seed. Coast live oak acorns are recalcitrant: they have essentially no dormancy, they germinate as soon as the fall rains wet them, and they die if they dry out. So gather them fresh, float-test to cull the weevilled ones, and sow them straight away — ideally in the ground where the tree will stand. If you must hold them a few weeks, keep them cool in slightly moist sand, sawdust, or a bag of barely damp peat, and check that they never dry. Do not put them in a warm room, do not spread them out to dry, and do not freeze them.

What the tree itself stores is water and time: a deep root system that carries it through a six-month dry season every year, and a canopy that will be shading the same ground long after everyone who planted it.

Propagation & seed saving

Sow fresh acorns in fall where the tree will grow - by far the best method, since they germinate immediately, cannot be dried, and resent transplanting. Cage them against squirrels and gophers.

Grow it from an acorn, sown in fall exactly where the tree will stand. Coast live oak acorns germinate with the first rains and need no stratification, cannot be stored dry, and produce a far better tree than any transplant because the taproot is never cut. Collect sound acorns as they drop, float-test them in a bucket and throw out the floaters, and plant three or four an inch or two deep in each spot, then thin to the strongest seedling after the first season.

The whole difficulty is protection. Ground squirrels and jays will take planted acorns, gophers take seedlings from below, and deer and rabbits browse the tops. Use a wire cage above and a basket below, keep a weed-free circle several feet across, and expect to defend the seedling for two or three years. Do not fertilize it and do not keep it wet.

A small container tree from a native-plant nursery is the practical alternative and works well — just buy the smallest one on offer and check that it is not root-bound, since a coiled taproot in a tall pot never straightens out. Regionally sourced local stock is worth seeking: coast live oak varies across its long range, and a tree from your own county is better matched to your rainfall and your local pathogens.

Ecology & wildlife value

The keystone plant of California: more caterpillar and moth species than any other tree in the state, and therefore the food supply of nesting birds, plus the acorn crop that supports woodpeckers, jays, deer, and woodrats. California oak woodland is the state's richest wildlife habitat.

Leached acorns are a genuinely nutritious traditional food — starchy, fatty, and the caloric backbone of California diets for millennia — but the coast live oak’s real nutrition is what it feeds beyond people.

Oaks are the keystone plant genus of California. They host more species of butterflies and moths than any other tree in the state, and because the overwhelming majority of songbirds must feed their nestlings caterpillars rather than seed, an oak canopy is quite literally where the next generation of birds comes from. A single coast live oak supports orders of magnitude more insect life — and therefore more bird life — than any ornamental tree of the same size.

Then there are the acorns. Acorn woodpeckers drill granary trees stippled with thousands of storage holes and hold them as family territory; western scrub-jays cache acorns in the soil and forget enough of them to plant the next oak woodland; band-tailed pigeons, deer, dusky-footed woodrats, and a long list of others depend on the mast. The tree’s cavities, furrowed bark, and dense evergreen crown shelter owls, bats, woodrats, and nesting birds year-round.

All of this matters more than it used to, because California’s oak woodlands are not replacing themselves — development, grazing, and competition from non-native annual grasses mean few seedlings ever reach maturity. Planting an oak, and protecting one, is one of the few genuinely consequential things a garden can do here.

History

The acorn was the staple food of coastal California for thousands of years, and the encina gave its name to towns across the state; today the tree is the emblem of California oak woodland conservation and is protected by ordinance in most cities.

For thousands of years the acorn was the staple food of California. Peoples across the coast and coast ranges — among them the Chumash, Tongva, Ohlone, and Kumeyaay — built an entire foodway around it: gathering in fall, storing in woven granaries, cracking and grinding in bedrock mortars whose worn holes are still visible on outcrops today, and leaching the tannins out through sand basins with water poured slowly over the meal. It fed more people in California than any farmed crop, and it is one of the most sophisticated wild-food technologies anywhere. These are living traditions, not vanished ones.

The Spanish called the tree encina, and the name stuck to the landscape — Encinitas, Encino, Paso Robles’ oak country, and a long list of Californian places named for their oaks. Under Mexican and then American ranching the woodlands were opened, grazed, and cut for firewood and charcoal, and in the twentieth century subdivision took much of what remained.

The modern story is protection. As it became clear that California oak woodlands were not regenerating and that mature trees were being lost to development, city after city adopted heritage- and protected-tree ordinances, and today removing or heavily pruning a mature coast live oak usually requires a permit and carries serious penalties. The tree has become the emblem of California native-plant gardening: the biggest single thing an ordinary garden can put back.

Troubleshooting

Almost every problem traces to water, soil disturbance, or a disease of the trunk. Summer irrigation and lawns cause oak root fungus; bleeding trunk cankers mean Sudden Oak Death; D-shaped exit holes in Southern California mean goldspotted oak borer. Chewed leaves, galls, and spring leaf drop are all normal.

Whole canopy browning quickly, dark sticky ooze on the lower trunk: the signature of a Phytophthora trunk canker — in the coastal counties, likely Sudden Oak Death. Get a diagnosis, do not move the wood, and see the threat entry; the neighbouring California bay laurel is usually the source. Slow decline, thinning crown, mushrooms at the base, white fan-like sheets under the bark at ground level: oak root fungus (Armillaria), and the cause is nearly always summer irrigation or a lawn inside the root zone. Turn the water off and pull the plantings back. Small D-shaped exit holes, dark wet staining on the bark, heavy woodpecker damage, in Southern California: goldspotted oak borer — report it, and never move oak firewood. All the leaves dropped in spring: normal, this evergreen swaps its whole canopy as the new flush comes. Leaves chewed, caterpillars everywhere, frass falling on the patio: California oakworm — a native moth that periodically defoliates coast live oaks; the tree refoliates, and spraying a keystone oak costs far more than the caterpillars do. Balls, buttons, spikes and woolly lumps on leaves and twigs: oak galls from tiny wasps — harmless, and one of the most interesting things about an oak. Clumps of green leafy growth high in the winter canopy: oak mistletoe — cut infested limbs back well inside the attachment if it gets heavy, otherwise tolerate it. Tree declining for no visible reason: think back a few years to any grading, paving, trenching, or new irrigation inside the root zone; oaks decline slowly and the cause is usually old.

Growing across climates

A Mediterranean-climate tree for roughly zones 8b-10b, built for wet winters and a six-month dry summer; superb along the California coast and coast ranges, and unhappy anywhere summers are wet or humid.

Coast live oak belongs to a very particular climate: cool wet winters, a long rainless summer, and coastal air. It is native from the Bay Area and Mendocino County south through the Coast Ranges into Baja California, mostly below about 3,000 feet and mostly west of the crest. Zones 9-10, coastal and cismontane California: its heartland, where it thrives on rainfall alone and takes fog, wind, and salt air without complaint. Zone 8b and colder interior valleys: workable at the margins, though hard freezes below roughly 12°F damage it, and interior live oak (Q. wislizeni) or valley oak (Q. lobata) is usually the better native for hot inland sites.

Its real limitation is not cold but summer moisture. This is a tree evolved for soil that dries out completely from May to October, and it has almost no resistance to the root pathogens that thrive in warm wet ground — which is why it does poorly in summer-rainfall climates and why irrigation kills it in its own range. Outside California it is essentially a specialist tree for other Mediterranean-climate regions.

On fire, coast live oak is one of the better trees to have. It is comparatively fire-resistant, its dense evergreen canopy carries less volatile fuel than eucalyptus or conifers, and mature trees commonly survive and resprout after burning. That is not a substitute for defensible space: what protects a house is spacing, clearing dead material and low fuel under the canopy, and following the requirements your own fire authority publishes.
