Cholla is a beloved edible - the flower buds ('cholla buds') are a traditional, calcium-rich desert food harvested before they open and de-spined. But it is one of the most hazardous cacti to handle: detachable spiny joints that cling at a touch, barbed spines that are hard to pull out, and GLOCHIDS (tiny barbed hairs) at the areoles. Always use long tongs and thick gloves, keep it away from paths and pets, and de-spine buds thoroughly (traditionally rolled to knock off spines) before eating.

Overview

Cholla (here the cane cholla, Cylindropuntia imbricata) is the branching, shrubby, cylindrical-jointed cactus that gives the Southwest and southern plains much of their spiky silhouette. Unlike the flat-padded prickly pears, chollas grow cylindrical, tubercled 'canes' that branch into a small spiny tree or shrub three to eight feet tall, armored with barbed spines and tiny glochids. Cane cholla is notably cold-hardy for a cactus, ranging well up onto the high plains and into the mountains, and its magenta-to-yellow spring flowers make it a striking xeriscape plant.

It is also a genuine food plant: its closed spring flower buds — 'cholla buds' — are a traditional, treasured food of the Tohono O'odham, Pueblo, and other desert peoples, picked before they open, laboriously de-spined, then boiled and dried into a tangy, artichoke-like vegetable that is exceptionally rich in calcium. Soil-borne rots that kill yarrow kept in wet, heavy, or poorly drained soil - the main way to lose an otherwise indestructible plant, since yarrow is adapted to dry, lean ground.

Troubleshooting

The defining 'problem' is handling: detachable clinging joints, barbed spines, and glochids make tongs and gloves essential, and dropped joints root everywhere. Otherwise rot from wet soil is the only real killer; cold-hardy cane cholla shrugs off freezes when dry.

Joints stuck to you, your clothes, or your pet: the classic cholla injury — a detached joint clings by barbed spines and is agony to remove bare-handed. Use a wide comb, sturdy sticks, or pliers to flick it off (never grab it), then remove individual spines with pliers; prevent it entirely by handling only with long tongs and thick gloves and by siting the plant away from all foot and pet traffic. Its limit, everywhere, is the same desert-cactus rule: cold is survivable, cold-plus-wet is not. It needs sharp drainage and dry winters; in wet, humid, or poorly drained climates it rots, which is why it is rarely successful in the humid East or Pacific Northwest except in fast-draining containers kept dry. Give cane cholla full sun and sharply drained soil, keep it dry in winter, and it adapts to a remarkable span of the country — from blazing low desert to cold, dry high plains — making it one of the toughest edible natives a cold-climate xeriscaper can grow, spines and all.
