Chokeberry
Chokeberries are safe and healthy - prized as an antioxidant 'superfruit.' The name warns that the raw berries are intensely ASTRINGENT and mouth-puckering, not poisonous; cooking and sweetening tame them into excellent juice, jam, and baked goods. Do not confuse chokeberry (Aronia, edible) with the unrelated chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), whose leaves and pits are cyanogenic.
