Burning Bush
Burning bush is not a food plant and its fruit is not safe to eat. Like other Euonymus, the orange-red seeds and their pink capsules contain irritant and cardioactive compounds; a child who eats them typically gets vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, and larger amounts can affect the heart. Keep fruit away from small children and call Poison Control if any is swallowed. The leaves and bark are not edible either. Handling the shrub is harmless - gloves here are for comfort, not safety.
Overview
The scarlet parking-lot hedge of the last fifty years, now banned from sale across most of New England. It seeds into woodland shade in carpets, and its fall color - the only reason anyone plants it - is bettered by half a dozen natives that also feed birds.
Burning bush (Euonymus alatus, more usefully called winged euonymus) earns its name for about two weeks a year, when the entire shrub turns a fluorescent scarlet-pink that nothing else quite matches. That fortnight built an industry. It is tough, shade-tolerant, deer-tolerant, shears into any shape, and asks for nothing, so it went into commercial landscapes, foundation plantings, and highway medians across the eastern half of the country by the million.
The problem is what happens after the color. Those inconspicuous spring flowers become thousands of small pink capsules that split to reveal orange-red seeds, birds strip them through late fall and winter, and the seed germinates readily in full woodland shade — which is the trait that makes this shrub genuinely dangerous rather than merely weedy. It does not need a disturbed edge. Walk an eastern woodland downwind of an old planting and you will find a carpet of burning bush seedlings under the canopy, hundreds per square yard, with no tree seedlings coming through them.
Sale is now banned in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Vermont, other states have it on invasive lists and are moving the same direction, and it remains freely sold across much of the Midwest and mid-Atlantic. Scale & Sooty Mold High
Scale insects are sap-suckers that spend most of their lives immobile, fixed to a stem, twig, or leaf underside beneath a waxy or shell-like cover. They look far more like bumps, blisters, or crusty encrustations than like insects, which is why an infestation is usually well established before anyone notices it. Soft scales excrete large amounts of sticky honeydew that drips onto everything below and grows a black sooty mold - and those blackened leaves are often the first thing a gardener actually sees. Armored scales produce no honeydew but sit under a hard shield that protects them from most sprays. They spread as tiny mobile crawlers in the weeks after hatching, which is the only stage that moves and the only stage that is easy to kill. Populations build on stressed plants, on crowded shaded growth, and above all on plants kept indoors in dry, still air over winter.
Watch for: Rows of small brown, tan, black, white, or waxy bumps along stems, twigs, leaf midribs, and leaf undersides that do not brush off but can be scraped loose with a fingernail. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on the floor, table, or path beneath the plant - that later turns black with sooty mold. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, since they farm and defend scale for that honeydew; often the first sign anything is wrong. Yellowing leaves, weak thin growth, and dieback of individual branches or canes that are heavily encrusted. On fruit crops, scale covers and sooty mold directly on the fruit. Check the leaf undersides and the shaded inner wood, which is where colonies build up unseen.
Prevent: Inspect. Look over leaf undersides and stems regularly - on a crop you pick, every harvest is a scouting chance - and check every new plant thoroughly before you buy it, plant it, or set it beside anything else, because scale almost always arrives on a plant rather than flying in. Quarantine new houseplants for a few weeks. Keep plants unstressed and not over-fertilized, since soft, forced growth is what populations build on. Prune for airflow and light to open up the shaded inner growth where scale hides, and prune out heavily infested wood as routine maintenance - on anything that gets a hard annual pruning, that alone removes most of any buildup. Leave the lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps alone, since they normally keep scale down to nothing, and keep ants off the plant where you can, because ants protect the colonies from those predators. Indoors, avoid hot, dry, still winter air.
Treat: Horticultural oil is the main control: it works by smothering, so it has to coat the insects thoroughly - stems, twigs, and leaf undersides - and it usually needs repeating, because the waxy covering shields them and no single pass reaches everything. On deciduous woody plants a dormant-season oil smothers the overwintering stage while the leaves are out of the way, and timing a growing-season spray to the crawler stage, when the young are mobile and uncovered, is far more effective than spraying settled adults. On a small plant or a light infestation, scrub or wipe the scales off by hand, or dab them with a cotton swab of rubbing alcohol. Prune out and destroy badly encrusted wood rather than trying to save it. Wash off the sooty mold once the scale is gone - it lives on the honeydew, not on the plant, and stops once the supply does. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant, and oils can burn delicate foliage, so test first.
Euonymus scale is the one thing that reliably disfigures this shrub: white cottony males and dark brown pear-shaped females crusting the stems, with yellow stippling and leaf drop as it builds. Heavily sheared hedges in still, shaded air are the classic victims. It is a good argument for removing the plant rather than for spraying it - especially since the native replacements are not hosts.
Shade-Germinating Seedling Carpets High
The mechanism that makes this shrub a forest problem rather than a hedgerow weed. Burning bush seed germinates readily in full woodland shade, which most invasive shrubs cannot do, so bird-dropped seed establishes under a closed canopy far from any planting. The result is a continuous carpet of seedlings - often hundreds per square yard under and downwind of a mature shrub - that suppresses tree seedlings, spring ephemerals, and native shrubs and quietly stops the woodland regenerating.
Watch for: Dense, uniform, ankle-high seedlings under and downwind of a mature shrub, and in woodland interior with no other disturbance. Winged twigs on knee-high plants deep in shade. Absence of tree seedlings and spring wildflowers through the carpet.
Prevent: Do not plant it, including the dwarf and 'sterile' cultivars, and remove any existing shrub before it fruits. Pull the seedling flush every spring while it is small - an hour with a bag beats a day with a saw later.
Treat: Hand-pull seedlings and small plants in moist soil; they come out. Remove the fruiting parent shrubs to shut off the seed supply, then keep walking the site each spring for several years, since neighboring plantings will keep re-seeding you.
Woodland Thicket Invasion (ecological harm) High
Where the seedlings grow up, burning bush forms a dense shrub layer that displaces native understory across eastern and midwestern forests, roadsides, old fields, and stream corridors. It tolerates deep shade, poor soil, drought, road salt, and deer browsing, so almost no site condition limits it, and it fruits heavily even in shade. The mature thicket casts dense summer shade of its own, and the low-value fruit it offers birds is poor substitute for the native shrubs it replaced.
Watch for: A continuous winged-twigged shrub layer under forest canopy or along a woodland edge. Shrubs fruiting heavily in deep shade. Blazing scarlet patches visible from a distance in a woodland in October - the easiest way to map an infestation.
Prevent: Remove ornamental plantings, which are the seed source; take out the largest fruiting shrubs first; and replant with natives so the cleared ground is not simply re-invaded.
Treat: Dig out the root crown of small and mid-sized shrubs, or cut low and treat the fresh stump immediately with a woody-plant herbicide from late summer to leaf drop, when reserves are moving downward; basal-bark treatment of small stems works in the dormant season. Use a product whose label lists the site you are treating and follow that label - it is legally binding. Near a wetland, ditch, or streambank, an aquatic-labelled product is required, and in most states a permit or a licensed applicator as well. Cutting without treating produces a denser, multi-stemmed shrub.
Toxic Fruit and Seeds Medium
Euonymus fruit is poisonous, and burning bush is usually planted at the front of a house where small children play. The rosy capsules split to expose seeds wrapped in a bright orange-red fleshy aril that looks appetizing and sits at toddler height. The seeds and surrounding tissue contain irritant and cardioactive compounds; ingestion typically causes vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping within a few hours, and larger amounts can affect heart rhythm. The genus is the old European spindle tree, long known as poisonous to children and livestock.
Watch for: Split pink capsules and loose orange-red seeds on the ground under a hedge, in a play area, or in a stroller path from fall into early winter.
Prevent: The permanent fix is removing the shrub, which is worth doing anyway. Short of that, clear fallen fruit from play areas, and teach children the general rule that no berry or seed from a landscape shrub is food.
Treat: If a child or pet swallows fruit or seeds, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222 in the US) or a veterinarian and follow their advice; do not induce vomiting on your own initiative. Take a piece of the plant with you if you seek care, since the winged twig identifies it instantly.
This is not the same fruit type as a true berry: it is a four-lobed capsule opening to arils. Worth knowing when reading a red-berried-shrub identification list, where burning bush is usually lumped in with actual berries.

Grow

Never plant it — identify it. Burning bush is a dense, twiggy, spreading shrub, typically 6 to 12 feet tall and as wide (the dwarf hedge form is smaller, but only for a while), and it carries one feature no native shares:
Corky wings. Young green stems have two to four flat, tan, corky ridges running lengthwise, like the fins on a rocket. They are raised enough to feel with a thumb, and they are present year-round, which makes this the single most reliable woody-plant identification in the eastern winter. Older trunks lose them near the base, so look at the young growth.
Opposite leaves. The leaves are strictly opposite — two per node, facing each other — which already excludes most shrubs; they are elliptical, pointed, and finely and evenly toothed, about 1 to 3 inches long.
The fruit. Small rosy-pink capsules split into four lobes to expose one to four seeds wrapped in bright orange-red fleshy arils. It reads as a red berry from a distance but it is not one; the split capsule is diagnostic. It is toxic, and it is what birds carry.
The color. Uniform fluorescent scarlet-pink, usually earlier than surrounding natives, over the whole shrub at once.
It grows in sun or deep shade, in acid or alkaline soil, wet-ish or dry, and shrugs off shearing, road salt, drought, and deer. There is no site condition that will contain it, which is exactly the problem.
Propagation & seed saving
How it spreads: bird-carried seed that germinates in full shade, producing carpets of hundreds of seedlings per square yard under and downwind of a parent shrub - plus vigorous resprouting from any stump that is cut but not treated.
Burning bush spreads almost entirely by bird-dispersed seed, and does it far better than most invasive shrubs for one reason: the seed is shade-tolerant at germination. Most weedy shrubs need an edge, a gap, or a disturbance. Burning bush does not. A robin that eats fruit from a hedge on Tuesday can start a colony in the interior of an intact forest on Wednesday, and that seed will come up under a closed canopy.
The result is the pattern land managers describe as a seedling carpet: hundreds of small burning bush per square yard under and downwind of a mature plant, forming a continuous layer that suppresses the tree seedlings, spring ephemerals, and native shrubs that would otherwise regenerate the woodland. A single ornamental hedge is enough to seed several acres over a couple of decades.
It also resprouts hard from cut stumps and from roots, so cutting alone multiplies stems rather than removing the plant. And the ‘sterile cultivar’ reassurance does not hold up: the common dwarf hedge forms set viable seed like the species. Genuinely reduced-fertility and sterile selections have been bred, and one older cultivar is notably low-seeded, but they are not what most nurseries stock, and where the species is banned the ban generally covers cultivars too.
Care
Removal, not care: pull the seedling carpet by hand, dig or cut-stump-treat the mature shrubs (cutting alone makes them resprout), work fall through winter, and expect to come back for seedlings for several years.
Start with the seedlings, not the shrub. Burning bush seedlings and small plants have shallow fibrous roots and pull by hand in moist soil; an hour under a mature shrub with a bag removes more plants than a day of chainsaw work. Then take out the fruiting parents, because they are what keeps reloading the carpet.
Mature shrubs need the crown killed. Cutting alone produces a denser, multi-stemmed plant. Either dig out the whole root crown — feasible on small and mid-sized shrubs, since the root system is shallow — or use a cut-stump treatment: cut low and paint or spray the fresh surface immediately, within minutes, before it seals over. Late summer through leaf drop is the strongest window, when the plant is moving reserves downward. Basal-bark treatment of small-diameter stems works in the dormant season and needs no cutting at all.
Whatever product you use, it must be one whose label lists the site you are actually treating — woodland, fencerow, ornamental bed, non-crop area. Read and follow that label; it is a legally binding document and it also tells you what you may replant and when. Do not treat inside a wetland, along a ditch, or on a pond or stream margin unless the product is specifically labeled for aquatic sites, which typically also means a permit or a licensed applicator in your state.
Then follow up for years. The seed bank is short-lived compared with some invasives, but the surrounding landscape keeps re-seeding you, so walk the site every spring, pull the flush while it is ankle-high, and plant the gap. Replacing a burning bush hedge with a native one is the durable fix: fothergilla, Virginia sweetspire, chokeberry, oakleaf hydrangea, highbush blueberry, and sumac all deliver scarlet-to-burgundy fall color, and every one of them feeds something.
Nutrition
Not a food, and genuinely toxic: the pink capsules and orange-red seeds cause vomiting, diarrhea and cramping, and larger amounts can affect the heart. Ecologically it runs at a loss, replacing native shrubs with low-value fruit and a seedling carpet.
Burning bush is not edible in any part, and the fruit is the reason to say so out loud. Like other Euonymus, the seeds and their surrounding tissue carry irritant and cardioactive compounds. A child who eats a handful of the orange-red seeds typically develops vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping within a few hours; larger ingestions can affect heart rhythm. Call Poison Control if any is swallowed. This matters because the fruit is small, bright, and at exactly toddler height in a foundation planting.
It is also worth knowing what the fruit actually looks like, because burning bush turns up on every list of red-berried woodland shrubs. It is not a berry: it is a rosy-pink capsule that splits into four lobes to expose seeds in an orange-red fleshy coat. If you are working out whether a red-fruited shrub is edible, spicebush is the one whose scratched twig smells strongly of allspice and citrus; burning bush, bush honeysuckle, barberry, winterberry holly, and nandina have no scent, and none of them is food.
Ecologically it is a net cost. Birds do eat the arils, which is precisely how it spreads, but the fruit is low-fat filler rather than the energy-dense food migrating birds need, and it arrives at the expense of the native shrubs that host caterpillars and support the whole food web. A woodland floor covered in burning bush seedlings is a woodland that is not regenerating.
Troubleshooting
Confirming it by the winged twigs, why cutting makes it worse, whether the dwarf and 'sterile' cultivars are safe, where it is banned, why seedlings appear in deep shade, the scale insect that disfigures it, and what to plant instead.
Is this burning bush? Run a thumb along a young green twig: two to four flat corky ridges is conclusive when combined with strictly opposite, finely toothed leaves. In fall, uniform fluorescent scarlet-pink; in fruit, pink capsules splitting to orange-red seeds. The wings are there in every season, so you never need the leaves.
I cut it down and got five stems back. That is what it does. Either dig the root crown out or treat the cut stump immediately after cutting; the fresh surface seals within minutes and untreated stumps resprout vigorously.
Is the dwarf hedge form all right? No. The common compact cultivars fruit and seed like the species. Reduced-fertility and sterile selections have been bred and one older cultivar sets notably little seed, but they are not what most nurseries carry, and where the species is banned the ban usually covers cultivars.
Where is it actually banned? Sale is prohibited in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Vermont; other states list it as invasive and some are phasing it out. It is still freely sold across much of the Midwest and mid-Atlantic. Check your state’s current invasive or noxious-weed list rather than assuming either way.
Why is it coming up deep in the woods? Because its seed germinates in full shade, which most invasive shrubs cannot do. That is the single fact that makes it a forest problem rather than an edge problem, and why removing the parent shrub in the yard is worth doing even if the woods look fine now.
My shrub has white crusty specks all over the stems and the leaves are going yellow. Euonymus scale — the one thing that reliably damages this plant. It is not a reason to keep the shrub; it is a reason to take it out and plant something else.

History
Introduced from Asia around the 1860s and popularized as an indestructible commercial-landscape shrub through the twentieth century, burning bush became one of the most-planted woody ornamentals in America - and one of the first to be banned once the seedling carpets were noticed.
Euonymus alatus came to the United States from northeastern Asia around the 1860s as an ornamental curiosity, and stayed minor for decades. Its rise came with postwar commercial landscaping, which wanted exactly what it offers: a shrub that survives parking lots, road salt, shearing, deep shade, drought, and deer, needs no attention, and delivers a spectacular two weeks of color. The compact hedge form released in the twentieth century made it the default foundation and median plant across the eastern half of the country.
Escape was reported by the late twentieth century and the scale of it became clear in the 2000s, when surveys of New England and mid-Atlantic woodlands found burning bush seedling carpets under closed canopy well away from any planting. Massachusetts listed it among the first wave of prohibited plants, and New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Vermont followed; the nursery trade responded by funding breeding work on sterile selections, which arrived after the bans rather than before them.
The genus name carries an older warning. Euonymus species are the spindle trees of European folk knowledge — the wood turned into spindles, and the fruit was long known to be poisonous to children and livestock. The toxicity of burning bush fruit is not a new discovery; it is the family reputation.
Growing across climates
Hardy and invasive across roughly zones 4-8 in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Midwest, where cold winters and shaded deciduous forest suit it; less aggressive in the Deep South and largely confined to irrigated landscapes in the arid West.
Burning bush is hardy from about zone 4 to zone 8 and invades most heavily where it is coldest and shadiest — the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Great Lakes region, in deciduous forest with a closed canopy. Its shade-germinating seed is what lets it move into forest interior there rather than sitting on edges, and the fall color it is grown for is also strongest in those cool-autumn climates, which is why the plantings and the invasion overlap so exactly.
In the Deep South it colors poorly and grows less vigorously, and privet and Chinese wisteria occupy the niche instead; in the arid and Mountain West it persists in irrigated landscapes but rarely escapes without supplemental water. Genuinely wet or saturated soil is one of the few conditions that stops it.
For control, the useful climate note is timing. In cold-winter regions the fall window for cut-stump work is long and clearly marked by the color change, and the dormant season for digging and basal-bark treatment runs for months. Further south, the shrub holds leaves later and the reserve-movement window shifts, so watch the plant rather than the calendar: treat when the leaves are turning and the shrub is shipping sugars downward.
