Blue Grama
Blue grama is a safe, non-toxic native grass and not a food crop. It is one of the most important grazing grasses of the western range, eaten by cattle, bison, pronghorn and rabbits with no ill effect, and there is nothing on it to irritate skin - no awns worth minding, no sap, no spines. Like any grass it sheds pollen when it flowers in late summer, but it is a light producer compared with lawn grasses such as bermudagrass.
Overview
The signature grass of the shortgrass prairie and the best native lawn grass for the dry West: fine blue-green tufts a foot high, comb-like seedheads held out sideways like eyelashes, and a tolerance for drought, cold and neglect that almost nothing else matches.
Blue grama (Bouteloua gracilis) is the grass that covers the shortgrass prairie — the dry, wind-scoured plains from the Canadian border to Mexico and from the Rockies out onto the High Plains. It is the state grass of both Colorado and New Mexico, it fed the bison herds, and it is still one of the most valuable range grasses in the West. It is also, quietly, one of the best garden plants in the arid interior of the country.
It makes fine, dense, blue-green tufts six to twelve inches high, topped in midsummer by its unmistakable seedheads: one to three narrow, comb-like spikes held almost at right angles to a thin stalk, which is why people call it eyelash grass or mosquito grass. Those stalks cure to a pale blond and hold their curious sideways shape right through winter.
What it offers a gardener is toughness with no maintenance attached. Blue grama is hardy from zone 3 to zone 10, survives on twelve inches of rain a year, wants no fertilizer, and needs mowing only if you want a lawn out of it. Left unmown it is a fine ornamental grass and meadow matrix; mown at two or three inches it makes a soft, low-water native lawn. It also earns its place ecologically — a larval host for grass-feeding skipper butterflies, a seed plant for small birds, and a deep-rooted soil-holder on ground that erodes easily.
The one thing to understand before planting is the calendar: it is a warm-season grass, so it greens up late in spring and goes blond early in fall, and it is straw-coloured for a good part of the year. In its own country that reads as normal.

Watch out for
Weeds in a New Stand High
The single biggest reason blue grama plantings fail, and it happens in the first season. Blue grama is a warm-season grass that greens up late and invests in roots before top growth, so for its whole first summer it is small, thin, and slow while fast annual weeds are at full speed. A stand that is left to fend for itself in year one is usually a weed patch by August, and people conclude the grass does not work rather than that it was outrun.
Watch for: A newly sown area coming up mostly as broadleaf weeds and annual grasses. Blue grama seedlings visible but tiny and widely spaced in midsummer. Bare gaps that never close.
Prevent: Start with a clean seedbed - clear existing weeds and their seed bank before sowing, not after. Sow into genuinely warm soil in late spring or early summer so the grass germinates fast rather than sitting, or use plugs, which skip most of the vulnerable period. Do not fertilize, since nitrogen helps the weeds far more than the grass.
Treat: Mow the whole area high through the first season - this beheads annual weeds before they seed without harming the low grass - and hand-pull perennial weeds. Overseed thin gaps the following early summer. Expect the stand to knit together in year two; the correct response to a thin first season is patience and weeding, not water and fertilizer.
Say it plainly to anyone starting a native lawn from seed: the first summer looks like a failure and is not. Everything about blue grama that makes it tough later makes it slow at the start.
Decline from Water & Fertilizer Medium
Blue grama is not damaged directly by generous treatment; it is outcompeted. Regular irrigation and nitrogen create exactly the conditions that favour bermudagrass, crabgrass, and cool-season lawn weeds, all of which grow faster than blue grama and take the ground. The pattern is familiar: someone treats a native lawn like a conventional one, it thins, they water and feed it more, and within two seasons it is mostly something else.
Watch for: A native lawn getting patchier the more it is watered. Coarse, fast, brighter-green grass appearing in patches and spreading. Cool-season weeds staying green through the hot months when the blue grama has gone blond.
Prevent: Water deeply and rarely or not at all, and never fertilize. Mow at two to three inches rather than short. Keep a deep cut edge between a blue grama lawn and any bermudagrass, and let the lawn go dormant and blond in high summer rather than irrigating it green.
Treat: Cut watering and feeding right back and mow higher, which shifts the balance back toward the native grass. Remove invading grasses by digging or with a grass-selective product whose label lists the site you are treating, used exactly as that label directs - and note that a grass-selective herbicide will damage blue grama too, so spot-treat rather than blanket-spray. Overseed thin areas in early summer.
The core mental shift for a native lawn: it is not a conventional lawn that needs less, it is a different kind of planting that is actively harmed by conventional care.
Rust Low
A minor fungal leaf disease that raises orange to rusty-brown pustules on the foliage in humid, crowded, poorly ventilated conditions. On a tough, well-sited plant it is cosmetic - it marks the leaves late in the season and the plant grows straight through it - and it is rarely worth treating.
Watch for: Orange to rusty-brown flecks, spots or streaks on the leaves, often raised and powdery on the undersides, worst in muggy weather and on crowded, shaded or poorly ventilated plants.
Prevent: Space plants for airflow, grow them in full sun, and avoid overhead watering. Remove the old foliage at the annual cut-back, since spores carry over on last year's leaves.
Treat: Remove affected foliage and improve airflow. This is almost always cosmetic and outgrown, so fungicide is rarely warranted.
Rare on blue grama in its dry native range and essentially cosmetic where it does appear - most often on irrigated or crowded plantings in a wetter climate than the grass really wants.
Crown Rot Low
Crown rot is the rotting of a plant at the crown - the growing point where the stems meet the roots, right at or just below soil level. Soil fungi and water molds that live in most ground attack that tissue whenever it sits wet, cold, and airless, and because the crown is the one part a perennial cannot regrow from, losing it usually means losing the plant. It is above all a winter problem: a plant that survives hard frost perfectly well in dry ground rots out in a wet one, and the classic story is a perennial that simply never comes back in spring. Dry-adapted plants growing in heavy or over-improved soil are the most vulnerable, along with anything that has mulch, wet leaves, or piled debris sitting against the crown, and anything planted too deep.
Watch for: A plant that fails to green up or emerge in spring when everything around it does - the most common way this gets discovered, and by then it is already too late. Stems that wilt, blacken, and collapse in wet weather while the soil is clearly damp rather than dry. A crown that is soft, dark, brown, or mushy when you press or lift it, sometimes with a foul smell, instead of firm and pale. New growth that pulls away from the crown with almost no resistance. Clumps browning and going hollow in the middle while the outer growth stays alive. In stands and cover crops, patches wilting, yellowing, and thinning out after wet spells or over a mild wet winter.
Prevent: Drainage and airflow at the crown are everything. Match the plant to the site first: a dry-adapted perennial planted in heavy or enriched ground is on borrowed time whatever else you do. In wet or clay soil, plant on a slope, berm, raised bed, or gritty rock-garden site so water drains away from the crown rather than standing over it. Set plants at the right depth - never bury the crown - and keep mulch, dead leaves, and debris pulled back from it rather than piled against it, since damp material resting on the crown is a common trigger. Do not overwater, and ease right off during dormancy, when a resting plant wants to be barely damp rather than wet. Give crowded plantings enough space and airflow to dry out, and do not sow a stand too thickly. In cold, wet climates, divide in spring rather than fall, so plants are not recovering from surgery through the wettest months.
Treat: There is usually no cure once the crown itself has rotted: the plant is lost, and the job is to save what you can and fix the site. Lift it, cut away every soft, dark, rotted part with a clean blade back to firm tissue, and replant only healthy divisions or firm outer growth into fresh, sharply drained soil or medium. On potted and specialist plants, repotting into fresh airy medium and keeping them drier with better airflow gives the best chance, though a badly rotted crown is usually beyond saving. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it. Replant somewhere better drained rather than back into the same wet spot - or start again from seed, cuttings, or self-sown seedlings, which is the realistic option for anything that resents being moved at all.
Uncommon in this dry-country grass and almost always confined to low, poorly drained spots or to lawns that were irrigated while dormant over winter. Fix the drainage and stop the winter watering and it does not recur.

Grow
Full sun, lean well-drained soil, warm-season timing, and no feeding. Sow into warm soil in late spring or set plugs, keep weeds off it through the first season, and then let rainfall take over.
Blue grama wants what the shortgrass prairie offers: full sun, lean and well-drained soil, and not much water. It tolerates clay, sand, gravel, and alkaline ground, takes wind and cold and heat, and is one of the most drought-proof grasses on the continent. It will not tolerate shade, and it does not want wet feet or rich living.
Timing is the thing people get wrong. This is a warm-season grass, so it germinates and grows when the soil is genuinely warm. Sow from late spring into early summer onto a clean, firmed seedbed and rake the seed in lightly — sowing into cold spring ground just gives the weeds a head start. For small areas, plugs on 6-to-12-inch centres close in within a season or two and skip most of that struggle. Keep a new stand damp until it is up and rooted, then stretch out the watering deliberately.
Year one is a weeding year. Blue grama is slow above ground while it builds roots, and nearly every failed native lawn failed here rather than later. Weed it, or mow it high to keep annual weeds from setting seed, and accept that it looks thin until its second season.
Feed it nothing. Nitrogen does not improve blue grama; it just accelerates everything competing with it, particularly cool-season weeds and bermudagrass. Skip fertilizer, skip amendments, and mow high if you mow at all. Once established it is essentially self-sufficient, and in most of its range it never needs watering again.
Care
As a lawn: mow to two or three inches a few times a season, water deeply and rarely or not at all, and never fertilize. As an ornamental: cut it back in late winter and otherwise leave it alone entirely.
Once established, blue grama is about as low-input as a plant gets, and how you care for it depends on which of its two jobs you have given it.
As a native lawn, mow it at two to three inches and only a handful of times through the summer — four or five cuts a season is typical, against twenty-odd for a conventional lawn. Do not scalp it; short mowing thins the stand and lets weeds in, which is the usual way a native lawn goes wrong. Water deeply and infrequently, perhaps an inch every three or four weeks in the hottest part of summer if you want it green, or not at all if you are content to let it go blond and come back after rain. Fertilize it never.
As an ornamental or meadow grass, do even less: leave it unmown all season, enjoy the eyelash seedheads and the blond winter tufts, and shear or mow the whole planting to two or three inches in late winter, before the new growth pushes. That is the entire annual routine.
Either way it has essentially no pests or diseases, needs no staking or dividing, and is long-lived. The two habits that damage it are both about generosity: too much water and too much nitrogen, which do not kill it directly but hand the ground to weeds and to aggressive lawn grasses that outgrow it. Growing blue grama well is largely a matter of doing less than feels right.
Cutting & seasonal display
No food harvest. Cut a few of the dried eyelash stalks for arrangements - they keep their sideways shape indefinitely - but leave most standing for winter texture and for the birds that work the seedheads.
Blue grama is an ornamental, lawn, and habitat grass, so cutting means cutting for display. The seed stalks are unusually good for this: the comb-like spike held out sideways is a distinctive shape, it dries without any special treatment, and it holds that shape and its pale blond colour indefinitely in an arrangement. Cut a few stalks at full ripeness in late summer or fall.
Leave most of them where they are. The standing stalks are the plant's winter interest, and the seed is genuinely useful to sparrows, juncos, and other small birds through a season when little else is available. In a meadow or lawn planting, the whole point is that you cut the stand once, in late winter, rather than harvesting from it.
There is no edible harvest here at all. On the range, blue grama is one of the most valuable forage grasses in the West — palatable, nutritious, and unusually good even after it cures, which is why it carried bison and later cattle through winters on the plains. That is an agricultural harvest, not a garden one.
Winter interest & drying
Blond from first frost to late spring - that is the honest trade-off and also the look. The tufts and eyelash stalks hold shape and colour all winter and dry perfectly for arrangements.
Blue grama spends a good half of the year straw-blond, and there is no way around it: it is a warm-season grass that greens up late in spring and colours off with the first hard frost. In the arid West that reads as the natural look of the season, and the winter plant is genuinely attractive — low blond tufts scattered with the pale, sideways seed stalks, catching low light and holding snow.
That is a good reason to leave the planting standing until late winter rather than tidying it in fall. The stalks feed birds, the tufts give small wildlife cover, and the whole thing has more texture than any bare bed.
The cut stalks dry beautifully with no technique required — cut them ripe, stand them somewhere airy, and they keep their shape and colour for years. If you want to save seed, strip the ripe spikes in early fall, let them dry fully, and store them cool and dry; blue grama seed keeps reasonably well and germinates readily with warmth the following summer. The plant itself overwinters as a dormant crown with deep roots and returns reliably for decades.
Propagation & seed saving
Seed sown into warm soil is the standard route and the economical one for any area; plugs and spring division are faster and surer for small plantings. It also self-sows gently where it is happy.
Blue grama is easy to propagate as long as you respect its warm-season timing.
From seed it is the workhorse of range seedings, restorations, and native lawns, and it is far the cheapest way to cover ground. Sow onto a clean, firmed seedbed once the soil is genuinely warm — late spring into early summer — rake in lightly, and keep it damp until it is up. Alternatively, dormant-seed in late fall so the seed simply waits for spring warmth. Either way, expect a thin first season and plan for weed control rather than being surprised by it.
By plug or division, set young plants or split clumps on 6-to-12-inch centres in spring as growth resumes. Plugs cost more but establish faster, compete better with weeds, and are the sensible choice for a small lawn, a border planting, or anywhere you want an even stand quickly. Established clumps divide readily in spring.
It also self-sows modestly where it is happy, filling gaps in a meadow or lawn on its own, and named selections such as Blonde Ambition are usually bought as plants because seedlings vary. Between cheap seed, easy plugs, and gentle self-sowing, a stand is not difficult to build — the difficulty is always the first summer.
Ecology & wildlife value
Not human food, but a keystone of the shortgrass prairie: a larval host for grass-feeding skippers, a seed plant for small birds, the most important native forage grass of the western range, and a dense-rooted soil holder on erodible ground.
Blue grama's value is ecological and agricultural rather than culinary. On the shortgrass prairie it is one of the two grasses that build the whole system — blue grama and buffalograss together — and it does a remarkable amount of work.
It is a larval host for grass-feeding skipper butterflies, including the green skipper, whose caterpillars feed on Bouteloua grasses. That matters because skippers are among the butterflies most often left out of pollinator gardens: nectar plants feed the adults, but only host grasses let them reproduce. Its seed feeds sparrows, juncos, and other small grassland birds, and the low tufts give cover and overwintering habitat for insects and small animals.
On the range it is arguably the most important native forage grass of the western plains — palatable, nutritious, tolerant of heavy grazing, and unusual in staying nutritious after it cures, which is why it sustained bison and later cattle through plains winters. Its dense fibrous root system, most of it in the top foot of soil, makes it a first-rate erosion control and revegetation grass on dry, unstable ground, and it is standard in reclamation seed mixes across the interior West.
In a garden, replacing thirsty turf with blue grama does real ecological work: less water and mowing, no fertilizer running off, and habitat and host plants where there were none.
History
The grass of the shortgrass prairie and the bison herds, state grass of Colorado and New Mexico, a mainstay of Dust Bowl reseeding and western range management, and now the backbone of low-water native lawns across the interior West.
Blue grama is the grass of the shortgrass prairie — the dry western third of the Great Plains, where twelve to eighteen inches of rain a year is normal and the grass grows knee-high to nothing. With buffalograss, it formed the sod that carried the great bison herds, and it was the forage that made ranching possible on the plains afterwards. Plains peoples knew it as the reliable grass of the dry country; it is still the standard against which range condition is judged across much of the West.
It took on a second role in the twentieth century. When the Dust Bowl exposed what happened to shortgrass country under the plough, blue grama was one of the grasses used to put the plains back together, and it remains central to reclamation and revegetation seed mixes for dry sites. Both Colorado and New Mexico name it their state grass, which is a fair reflection of how thoroughly it defines those landscapes.
Its garden career is recent and growing fast. As Western cities have confronted the cost of irrigating cool-season lawns, blue grama — alone or mixed with buffalograss — has become the standard low-water native lawn across the interior West, and the ornamental selection Blonde Ambition, introduced through the Plant Select program, put its eyelash seedheads into gardens far outside its native range. A grass that survived being ploughed, grazed, and blown away is now most often planted deliberately.
Troubleshooting
Nearly every problem is timing or generosity: sown too early into cold soil, lost to weeds in year one, mown too short, or watered and fed until bermudagrass and cool-season weeds take the ground.
I sowed it and almost nothing came up: usually sown too early. Blue grama is a warm-season grass and needs genuinely warm soil — late spring into early summer — and a cold-soil sowing mostly germinates weeds. Re-sow when the soil warms, or dormant-seed in late fall and let it wait for spring.
My new stand is thin and full of weeds: the normal first season, and the point at which most native lawns are abandoned. Blue grama grows slowly above ground while it roots. Weed it or mow it high through year one and it knits together in year two.
It is brown from October to May: that is dormancy, not death. Warm-season grasses green up late and colour off early, and in the West this is simply what the season looks like. If a long blond period is not acceptable, blue grama is the wrong plant, not a plant to be fixed with water.
Bermudagrass and cool-season weeds are taking over: almost always too much water and nitrogen. Both favour the competition, not the blue grama. Cut the watering right back, stop feeding, and mow higher.
The lawn thinned out after I mowed it short: scalping is the classic mistake. Two to three inches is the floor; below that the stand opens and weeds move in.
It is dying under the tree: shade. Blue grama needs full sun and there is no way around that — use a shade-tolerant groundcover there instead.
Sections died over winter in a low spot: wet, poorly drained ground, especially if it was watered while dormant. Improve the drainage or plant something that wants moisture there.
Genuine pests and diseases are essentially non-issues on this grass.
Growing across climates
Exceptional across the dry interior West and Great Plains, roughly zones 3-10, from the Canadian border to Mexico. Its limits are shade and humidity rather than temperature - it is not a grass for the humid East.
Blue grama covers an extraordinary climatic range for a single species, from the cold Canadian plains to northern Mexico and from sea-level desert basins to over 10,000 feet in the southern Rockies, roughly zones 3-10. Its adaptations are all about dry heat and cold: a dense fibrous root system that captures light rainfall in the top foot of soil, warm-season photosynthesis that works efficiently at high temperatures, and the ability to go dormant and blond in drought and simply resume when rain comes.
High Plains and shortgrass country (Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, the Dakotas, eastern New Mexico and Texas): home ground, and it needs nothing at all. Intermountain West and Great Basin: excellent, and the natural grass matrix to plant among sagebrush and other dry shrubs. Southwest and high desert: superb, tolerating heat and alkaline soil; southern seed sources perform best. Northern plains and mountain valleys: fully cold-hardy, though with a shorter green season.
The humid East and Southeast, and west of the Cascades: not the right grass. It survives the temperatures but loses steadily to more aggressive humid-climate grasses and weeds where rainfall is high, and the green season is not long enough to justify it. Roughly speaking, above about twenty-five inches of annual rainfall it stops being the easy choice.
Because it spans so much country, regional seed sources matter: northern ecotypes are hardier and shorter-seasoned, southern ones are more heat-adapted. For lawns and restorations alike, buy seed sourced near your own latitude.
