Introduced - Arnica montana is native to the mountains of Europe. The meadow arnica grown in its place, Arnica chamissonis, is native to western North America.
Plant with care. Arnica montana is genuinely hard: it needs lean, acidic, sharply drained soil and cool summers, and fails in ordinary rich garden ground. Grow Arnica chamissonis instead in most of the US. Every part is toxic if eaten - this is a topical-only plant.

TOPICAL USE ONLY, on unbroken skin. Never eat any part of arnica: it contains helenalin and related sesquiterpene lactones that are cardiotoxic and cause severe gastroenteritis, and fatal poisonings are on record. The FDA classes arnica as unsafe internally. Do not apply to cuts or broken skin, where absorption rises sharply. Prolonged topical use causes allergic contact dermatitis, especially with daisy-family allergy. Avoid in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and if you take anticoagulants.

Overview

The classic bruise herb of the Alps, and an honestly difficult plant: Arnica montana wants lean acidic soil, sharp drainage and cool summers, and dies in ordinary rich garden ground. Grow meadow arnica (A. chamissonis) instead in most of the US. Topical only - every part is toxic if eaten.

Arnica is the golden daisy behind every tube of bruise cream in the pharmacy. Arnica montana — mountain arnica, or mountain tobacco — has been the standard European remedy for bumps, bruises and sore muscles for centuries, applied to the skin as an infused oil, salve or gel. It is a handsome plant too: a flat rosette of soft veined leaves that sends up a single stem topped with a shaggy yellow-orange flower head about two inches across.

Now the honest part: it is hard to grow. Arnica montana is an alpine plant of thin, sour mountain turf. It wants lean, acidic soil (pH about 4.5-6.0), sharp drainage, and cool summers, and it declines fast in the rich, near-neutral, well-fed soil that suits almost everything else in your garden. Add heat and humidity and it simply melts. Most gardeners who buy a packet of montana seed on the strength of the salve never get a harvest from it.

The useful answer is to grow the other one. Arnica chamissonis — meadow arnica, sometimes sold as leafy arnica — is native to western North America, hardy to about zone 3, far less fussy about elevation and soil, and it flowers generously at sea level. It is listed in the German Commission E monograph alongside montana and is used in exactly the same way. If you want arnica salve from your own garden rather than a photograph of an alpine meadow, plant chamissonis.

One rule sits over everything else here. Arnica is topical only, on unbroken skin. It is genuinely poisonous eaten, and people have died from it. Nothing in this entry is a recipe for tea.

      Mix the seed with damp sand or vermiculite in a bag and hold it in the refrigerator for 2-4 weeks before sowing. Arnica is an alpine plant and germinates far more evenly after a cold spell. Fall sowing outdoors does the same job for free.

      Site is the whole game. Aim for pH 4.5-6.0, gritty and free-draining, low in nutrients, with no lime anywhere near it. A raised gravel or sand bed, a slope, or a large pot of lime-free mix beats an ordinary bed. Space plants 10-12 inches apart in full sun, or with afternoon shade in hot-summer regions.

      In the wild it grows in thin, poor alpine turf precisely because nothing vigorous can live there. In a garden bed grasses and lush perennials will smother it within a season. Weed by hand around the crown and keep strong neighbors well back.

      This is the instruction most gardeners get wrong. Rich soil, manure, and general fertilizer make soft growth, few flowers, and rot. If a plant looks weak the answer is almost never food - it is drainage, pH, or heat.

      A shallow layer of coarse grit or sharp sand around the crown keeps the collar dry, holds down weeds, and keeps the root run cool without adding fertility. Bark and compost mulches hold moisture at the crown and cause rot.

      Arnica is a well-documented contact allergen. Picking a few flowers bare-handed is fine for most people, but if you are processing quantity, or you know you react to daisies, chamomile or ragweed, wear gloves.

Watch out for

Slugs and snails are nocturnal mollusks that rasp ragged holes in soft leaves, shear off seedlings at ground level, and chew into ripe fruit that touches the soil. They feed at night and in the early morning and spend the day hidden under boards, pots, dense mulch, leaf litter, and low foliage, becoming active in exactly the cool, damp, shaded conditions that suit young plants. Damage is heaviest in wet spells and on tender spring growth: a single wet week can erase a row of seedlings while an established, tough-leaved plant of the same species is barely marked. They lay clusters of small pearly eggs in damp soil and under debris, so a garden with plenty of cover carries a resident population year after year rather than being invaded from outside.

Watch for: Irregular ragged holes chewed out of the middle of leaves and along the edges - not the clean-edged cuts a caterpillar leaves. Seedlings that vanish overnight, or that are cut off at soil level with nothing left behind. Silvery dried slime trails across leaves, soil, pots, and paving in the morning: this is the giveaway that tells you it was mollusks rather than an insect. Chewed pits in ripe fruit, especially where it rests on the ground. Damage that shows up on the lowest, dampest leaves first and gets worse after rain or evening watering. Turn over a board, an upturned pot, or a clump of dense mulch during the day and look for the animals themselves sheltering in the cool underneath.

Prevent: Take away the daytime shelter first: lift boards and upturned pots, clear piles of debris, keep dense mulch pulled back from crowns and stems, and give crowded plantings enough airflow to dry out. Water in the morning rather than the evening so the surface is dry by the time they come out. Copper tape around containers and raised beds gives them a shock they will not cross, and it is the one barrier that reliably works. Get plants past the vulnerable stage quickly - start seedlings in pots and set them out at a decent size rather than direct-sowing into a cold wet bed, since most plants stop being worth defending once the leaves toughen. Leave the ground beetles, frogs, toads, and ground-feeding birds alone, because they eat mollusks all night for free and broad-spectrum slug pellets kill them too. Where thick-leaved or resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, they take far less damage.

Treat: Hand-picking works and costs nothing: go out an hour after dark with a headlamp, drop what you find into soapy water, and repeat nightly for a week or two - persistence is what wins, not any single product. Shallow beer traps sunk to soil level catch them too, but need emptying and refilling daily to be worth anything. Iron-phosphate bait is the standard control and is far lower-risk around pets and wildlife than the old metaldehyde products, but it is not harmless: many formulations include EDTA, and a dog that eats a quantity of pellets can develop iron toxicosis. Scatter it thinly per the label, never in piles, and keep dogs off a baited bed. Clear fallen foliage and debris in autumn, where the eggs are laid. In a wet climate this is a population you manage each season rather than one you eradicate - and on most established plants light grazing is cosmetic and needs nothing at all.

The main pest of arnica and worst by far on seedlings and young rosettes, which sit flat on the ground and can be cleared overnight. Keep pots up off the soil, pull debris and mulch away from crowns, and hand-pick after dark for the first few weeks after planting out. Established plants shrug off light grazing; a tray of seedlings does not.

Root rot is not one organism but a group of soil fungi and water molds - Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and others - that sit harmlessly in most soils and only turn destructive when the ground stays saturated. Waterlogged soil drives the air out, the roots suffocate, and the weakened tissue is invaded and goes soft, brown, and stringy. Because the damage is underground you usually see it first as something that looks like drought: wilting, yellowing, stunting, a plant that does not respond to being watered. Overwatering, heavy compacted ground, a low spot that collects runoff, a pot with no drainage or a saucer left standing full, and cold wet soil in winter are the usual causes. Once roots have actually rotted there is no cure - this is a problem you prevent rather than treat.

Watch for: Wilting in the middle of the day on a plant whose soil is damp - the classic tell, and the reason people water a rotting plant and finish it off. Leaves yellowing from the bottom up, dull off-color foliage, and growth that stalls for no visible reason. Whole shoots, or one side of the plant, collapsing while the rest still looks fine. Soft, dark, or mushy tissue at the base of the stem or at the crown, sometimes with a sour smell. Lift a failing plant and look at the roots: healthy ones are firm and pale, rotted ones are brown or black and slimy, and the outer layer slips off between your fingers leaving a thread of core behind. Seedlings that topple over at soil level are the same problem, called damping-off.

Prevent: Drainage is the whole defense. Match the plant to the site first - something that wants sharp drainage will not survive heavy clay or a low, water-collecting spot however well you tend it. Where the ground is heavy, plant on a raised bed, berm, or slope, or grow in a container. Set plants at the depth they were already growing, since burying the crown or the root flare is a common cause of rot, and keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the stem base instead of piled against it. Water the soil rather than the calendar: check that the top inch or two is dry before watering again, cut back hard in cool weather and winter dormancy, and never leave a pot standing in a full saucer. Do not plant or dig in soggy ground, and go easy on rich amendments for plants that want it lean. Rotate annual crops, and start with clean healthy plants and fresh mix.

Treat: There is no cure for tissue that has already rotted, so act on the conditions rather than looking for a spray. Stop watering at once and fix the drainage - open up compacted soil, or move the plant to a raised, sharply drained position or a container. Lift a badly affected plant, cut away every soft dark root and rotted section with a clean blade back to firm pale tissue, and replant only the healthy parts into fresh free-draining soil or mix. Often the better move is to give up on the plant and save its offspring instead: cuttings, offsets, or divisions taken from firm healthy growth root readily and give you a clean start. Bin the rotted material rather than composting it, and correct the drainage before you replant, because the rot comes straight back in the same wet spot.

The number one killer of cultivated arnica, and the reason it fails in ordinary beds. Crown rot in winter wet is the usual form: the shallow rhizome sits just under the surface and rots if water lingers. Plant raised, gritty and sharply drained, mulch with grit rather than bark or compost, keep the collar clear, and water only when the top inch dries. In a wet-winter climate, growing in raised beds or pots is the practical fix.

Gray Mold (Botrytis) Medium DiseaseMay, Jun, Jul, Aug

Botrytis cinerea and its relatives - the fuzzy gray-brown mold of cool, wet, humid weather. It blights flowers and buds, rots ripening fruit, and moves into soft, aging, bruised or frost-damaged tissue through the smallest wound, coating whatever it kills in dusty gray spores. It overwinters on dead plant debris, spreads on air currents and by direct contact between touching tissue, and keeps working after harvest, which is why it also ruins fruit and bulbs in storage.

Watch for: Browned, collapsed flowers and buds; soft, water-soaked brown patches on leaves, stems or fruit; and a dusty gray-brown fuzz over the dead tissue. Rot jumping between two pieces of fruit or two petals that touch is the signature, and it often shows up again in the fridge or the storage box days later.

Prevent: Space and prune for airflow, water at the base rather than over the top, and go easy on nitrogen, which produces the soft growth it prefers. Clear dead leaves, spent flowers and rotting fruit at every pass, since that debris is where it overwinters. Handle fruit, buds and bulbs gently, because it enters through bruises, and cure and store anything you keep dry and well ventilated.

Treat: Cut out and destroy infected tissue as soon as it appears, and bag it rather than composting it. Harvest ahead of a prolonged wet spell and store the crop dry and cold. Protective fungicides help through long damp weather, but airflow and sanitation do most of the work.

A harvest problem more than a plant problem. Rain sitting in open flower heads turns them brown and fuzzy, and picked-wet flowers go moldy on the drying screen instead of drying. Pick on dry mornings after the dew lifts, remove spoiled heads from the plant, and spread the harvest thinly with real airflow. Never jar flowers that are not brittle.

Powdery Mildew Medium DiseaseJul, Aug, Sep

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that coats leaves - and often stems, buds, and fruit - in a white-to-gray powder that looks like spilled talcum. It is not one fungus but a large family of them, each fairly specialised to its own group of plants, which is why mildew on one crop rarely jumps to an unrelated one beside it. Unlike most leaf diseases it does not need wet leaves: it thrives on warm dry days followed by humid nights, and it takes hold fastest where plants stand crowded in still air or in shade. The coating blocks light, so heavily covered leaves yellow, brown, and drop early. On many plants that is mostly disfiguring and arrives late enough not to matter; where it strips away the leaves a crop still needed to finish, it costs you size, sweetness, and quality.

Watch for: Round white powdery spots on the upper leaf surfaces that spread and merge until whole leaves look dusted. It usually starts on the oldest, lowest, most shaded leaves and works upward, so check there first. Look at the undersides too, and at stems, buds, and flower stalks, which get coated as it advances. Leaves that yellow, brown, curl, or go crisp and drop early under the coating. New growth that opens small, crumpled, or twisted where the fungus has reached the shoot tips. On plants where it gets onto the fruit, a dull gray film, russeted or scarred skin, and cracking. Late in the season, tiny dark specks scattered through the white felt - that is the fungus setting up to overwinter on the debris.

Prevent: Give plants room. Crowding and still air are the biggest single driver, so space at the full recommended distance, thin seedlings properly, and divide or prune out congested growth until air moves through the plant. Full sun and an open position help; deep shade and a still corner against a wall are where it always starts. Water at the base rather than overhead, and water early in the day so nothing stays damp overnight. Keep plants evenly watered - drought stress at the roots leaves them far more susceptible, even though the fungus itself likes dry air. Go easy on nitrogen, since soft lush growth is the most vulnerable. Where resistant varieties exist for what you are growing, choosing one is the single most effective thing you can do on a plant that mildews every year. Clear infected leaves and stems away at the end of the season rather than composting them.

Treat: Start early: sprays protect healthy tissue, they do not clean up leaves that are already coated. Pick off and bin the worst leaves as soon as you see them, and open the plant up by thinning or pruning so air moves through. On anything that regrows quickly, shearing the whole plant back forces a clean flush and beats spraying. If it keeps spreading, potassium bicarbonate, horticultural oil, or neem applied weekly will hold it - cover both leaf surfaces. Sulfur also works, but it burns the foliage of some plants, should never go on in heat, and must not be mixed with or applied close behind an oil spray. Whatever you use must be labeled for the plant you are treating: follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval on anything you eat. Do not compost badly infected material. Late-season mildew on a plant that is finishing anyway is usually cosmetic; on a crop still filling out it is worth acting on.

Shows up in humid, still, warm conditions - which is to say exactly the summers that arnica dislikes anyway. Treat it as a symptom of a bad site rather than a spray problem: open the planting up, keep neighbors back, water at the base in the morning, and if it recurs every year the honest answer is that your summers are too muggy for montana. Meadow arnica handles humidity better.

Aphids Low PestMay, Jun, Jul

Aphids are small soft-bodied sap-suckers - green, black, gray, pink, or waxy white, and mostly wingless - that gather in dense colonies on the tenderest new growth: shoot tips, buds, and the undersides of young leaves. They breed extremely fast in mild weather, so a few can become hundreds inside a week. Their feeding curls and distorts soft growth, and the sticky honeydew they excrete coats everything below and turns black with sooty mold. Ants often farm and defend the colonies for that honeydew. A few aphids are normal on almost any plant and a healthy plant shrugs them off; only dense, persistent colonies do real damage, and some aphids also spread plant viruses as they feed.

Watch for: Dense clusters of tiny insects packed onto shoot tips, flower buds, and the undersides of young leaves. Curled, cupped, or distorted new growth that never opens properly. A sticky shine on the leaves - and on whatever sits under the plant - that later goes black with sooty mold. Tiny white cast skins left behind where a colony has been feeding. Ants running steadily up and down the stems, which is often the first thing you notice. Mottled, streaked, or misshapen leaves that do not grow out can mean a virus the aphids brought with them rather than the feeding itself.

Prevent: Go easy on nitrogen: the soft, lush growth that heavy feeding produces is exactly what aphids breed on. Check new growth once a week through spring and early summer so you catch colonies while they are still small, and rub the first few out with your fingers. Leave flowering plants nearby and skip broad-spectrum sprays - ladybugs, lacewings, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps do most of this work for free, and they only stay if there is something for them to eat. Keep ants off the plant where you can, since they protect aphids from those predators. Water steadily so plants are not stressed, and check any new plant over before you bring it home or move it indoors, since aphids usually arrive on something else.

Treat: Knock the colonies off with a hard jet of water and repeat every few days - on most plants that alone ends it. Pinch out or prune off the worst-infested tips rather than treating the whole plant. If colonies keep rebuilding, spray insecticidal soap or horticultural oil directly onto the insects, covering leaf undersides, and repeat weekly until they are gone; treat early or late in the day, and never spray a wilted or heat-stressed plant. Avoid broad-spectrum insecticides - they kill the ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps that were about to solve the problem for you, and aphid numbers usually come back worse afterward. Anything you spray must be labeled for the plant you are treating; follow that label and observe its pre-harvest interval. On anything you eat, wash leaves, heads, and buds well before use, since aphids hide down in crowns, folds, and tight growth.

Colonies gather on flower stems and buds in early summer and can distort the heads you are hoping to pick. Rarely serious on a healthy planting - a hard jet of water usually ends it. Avoid spraying anything on flowers destined for an infused oil, and take the hint if aphids keep returning: it usually means the bed has been fed.

Deer are the largest garden problem across much of the country, and where pressure is high they set the limit on what you can grow at all. They browse at night and around dawn and dusk, taking tender shoots, leaves, buds, flowers, and fruit within about five feet of the ground, and they come back night after night to anything they have found and liked. Because they have no upper incisors they tear rather than cut, leaving ragged stem ends - that is how you tell deer damage from a rabbit's clean angled cut. In fall, bucks rub their antlers on young trunks and can strip the bark right around a stem, which kills a young tree outright. Palatability varies enormously between plants and between seasons: a herd short of food in late winter eats things it ignores in June, and no plant is truly deer-proof.

Watch for: Growth cleanly missing overnight, with the plant browsed back to a level line about as high as a deer can comfortably reach. Ragged, torn stem ends rather than the clean angled cut a rabbit leaves - the single most reliable identifier. Buds and flowers gone while the foliage below is untouched, since deer often take the best part first. Hoof prints and droppings in soft ground near the damage. Repeat visits, with fresh damage each morning once a planting has been found. On young trees, shredded and stripped bark and broken low branches in autumn - that is antler rubbing rather than feeding.

Prevent: Fencing is the only thing that reliably works. Eight feet is the standard for excluding deer, or two parallel four-foot fences a few feet apart, which they will not jump because they cannot judge the landing. Short of that, cage individual plants: a sturdy wire cage or trunk guard around every young tree, left on until the trunk is thick and the canopy is above browse height, prevents both browsing and antler rubbing and is the single highest-value thing you can do for a young tree. Repellent sprays do help at moderate pressure, but they wash off and deer habituate, so reapply after rain and rotate between different types through the season. Motion-activated sprinklers, scent deterrents, and noise devices work for a while and then stop. Siting matters too: plants close to the house, in daily traffic, and screened behind other planting get browsed less than the same plant out at the boundary.

Treat: There is no chemical fix, only exclusion and recovery. Get physical protection up immediately after the first damage, because deer return to a known meal, and reinforce or rotate whatever you were relying on before. Most plants regrow from browsing if the crown and roots are intact - feed and water a grazed plant and protect the regrowth while it comes back. What does not recover in the same season is anything whose buds or flowers have been taken, and a young tree whose bark has been rubbed right around the trunk is usually lost. Where deer pressure is genuinely heavy, the honest answer is to fence properly or to grow the plants deer leave alone, rather than to keep replacing losses.

Do not count on arnica being deer-proof. It is bitter and toxic and garden sources often list it as deer-resistant, but wild arnicas are genuinely grazed: heartleaf arnica can make up around a quarter of deer and elk summer diet in its native range. Browsing hurts most on a small young planting, where losing the rosettes costs you the season. Cage new plants for their first year and watch the patch in spring rather than assuming it will be left alone.

The one to actually plant, and the single most useful recommendation in this entry. Meadow arnica - also sold as leafy arnica or Chamisso arnica - is native to western North America, hardy to roughly zone 3, and it grows and flowers well at low elevation in ordinary garden conditions where Arnica montana fails. It demands lean, acidic (pH 4.5-6.0), sharply drained, low-nutrient soil, dislikes lime intensely, is a poor competitor against grasses, and needs cool summers - it declines quickly in rich beds and melts in heat and humidity. Worth attempting in the mountain West, the Pacific Northwest and the cool northern tier, in a raised gritty acidic bed. Elsewhere, grow chamissonis instead.

Grow

Recreate a thin alpine meadow: lean acidic gritty soil at pH 4.5-6.0, no lime, no compost, sharp drainage, full sun with cool roots. Surface-sow light-dependent seed after 2-4 weeks of cold, and expect slow seedlings.

Everything about growing arnica is about subtraction. In the wild it lives in poor, acidic, grazed mountain turf where nothing vigorous can outcompete it, so the garden version of that is a lean, gritty, lime-free bed at roughly pH 4.5-6.0 — sand, grit, and a little acidic loam or peat, with no manure, no compost and nothing limy anywhere near it. A raised bed, a gravelly slope, or a big pot of ericaceous (rhododendron-type) mix is far more likely to succeed than a spot in a normal border. Give it full sun where summers are cool, and afternoon shade where they are not.

From seed, plan on patience. Arnica needs light to germinate, so surface-sow and do not cover, and it comes up far more evenly after 2-4 weeks of cold stratification in damp sand in the refrigerator — or simply sow outdoors in fall and let winter do it. Germination takes 2-4 weeks at around 55-65°F and is famously erratic. The seedlings that follow are tiny and slow; pot them on individually and grow them for several months, sometimes most of a year, before planting out at 10-12 inches apart.

Buying a plant is a reasonable shortcut, and dividing an established clump is the reliable one. Whatever the route, get the site right first: arnica planted in good garden soil is a plant you will lose, and no amount of aftercare fixes it.

Care

Do less. No fertilizer, no compost, no lime, grit rather than bark mulch, water only in dry spells, and hand-weed relentlessly - arnica loses every competition with vigorous neighbors.

Arnica is the rare plant where good gardening habits kill it. Do not feed it. Fertilizer and compost produce floppy soft growth, fewer flowers, and rot. Do not lime it or let wood ash, mushroom compost, or concrete run-off near the bed. And do not mulch it with bark or compost — use a shallow layer of coarse grit or sharp sand, which keeps the crown dry and the roots cool without adding fertility.

Water in dry spells so the soil stays like a wrung-out sponge, and stop there; the fastest way to lose arnica is a wet crown. Its real enemy in a garden, though, is competition. It grows in poor turf because poor turf is where grasses and lush perennials cannot bully it, and in a bed it will be smothered inside a season. Hand-weed around the crowns every couple of weeks through spring and keep vigorous neighbors well back.

Cut spent flower stems and dead foliage away in late fall so nothing wet sits on the rosettes over winter. Every three or four years, lift and divide the clump in early spring or fall — it keeps the planting vigorous and gives you free plants.

Harvest

Pick flower heads at early to full bloom on a dry morning, going over the patch every 3-4 days through summer, and dry them in a warm dark airy place until brittle. Expect a real harvest from year two or three.

The flower head is the crop. Pick it from early bloom through full bloom, while the ray petals are bright and firm and before the central disc darkens and the head starts fluffing into seed. Harvest on a dry morning after the dew has lifted, snipping or snapping the head off just below its base. Because heads open in sequence over several weeks, arnica is a repeating harvest: go over the patch every 3-4 days through peak bloom.

Don't expect much in year one — a first-year plant is building a rhizome, and a meaningful harvest usually arrives in the second or third summer. Meadow arnica is much the more generous of the two, throwing several branched stems per crown and blooming over a long stretch, where montana typically gives you one stem per rosette.

Dry the heads promptly. Spread them in a single layer on screens or paper somewhere warm, dark, dry and airy and leave them until the petals are brittle and the center crumbles. Darkness genuinely matters here: light bleaches the color and degrades the plant's constituents. If you are processing a large picking, or you know you react to daisies, ragweed or chamomile, wear gloves — arnica is a documented contact allergen. And leave a share of the bloom for the bees.

Storage

Keep dried flowers airtight, dark and cool for about a year; the usual home form is an infused oil steeped 4-6 weeks and thickened with beeswax into a salve. Label everything TOPICAL ONLY and store it away from food.

Fully dried heads go into a clean airtight jar, kept dark and cool, and hold their quality for roughly a year — arnica is not a herb worth hoarding, so make what you need from each season's picking. If the flowers ever feel soft or leathery instead of brittle, they have picked up moisture and will mold; dry them again straight away.

The classic home preparation is an infused oil: fill a jar about a third full of dried flowers, cover them completely with olive, sunflower or another stable carrier oil, seal it, and leave it in a warm spot for 4-6 weeks, shaking it now and then. Strain out the flowers, and either bottle the oil or melt it with beeswax at roughly one part wax to four parts oil to make a salve. Use dried flowers, never fresh — water left in the oil is what turns a batch rancid.

Label it clearly and store it away from the kitchen. A jar of golden flowers in oil looks exactly like something you would cook with, and arnica is toxic swallowed. Write TOPICAL ONLY on the lid, and keep it out of reach of children.

Propagation & seed saving

Division of the rhizome every 2-3 years is the reliable route and gives you free plants; seed works but is slow, erratic and light-dependent. Never dig arnica from the wild - montana is in decline across Europe.

Division is the way to multiply arnica. The plant spreads by a shallow creeping rhizome, and every two or three years you can lift a clump in early spring or early fall, tease or cut it into pieces that each carry a section of rhizome plus a rosette or two, and replant them at fresh spacing in lean gritty soil. Meadow arnica divides especially readily and builds into a colony; montana is slower and more grudging about it. Water the divisions in and then leave them alone.

From seed, the rules are the ones that trip people up: it needs light, so surface-sow and never cover it; it germinates much better after 2-4 weeks of cold; and viability drops off quickly, so use fresh seed and accept a patchy stand. Fall sowing outdoors is the low-effort version of all of this. Saved seed from your own plants works, but arnica is a poor self-sower in gardens, so you will be collecting the ripe fluffy heads deliberately rather than finding volunteers.

One thing not to do: do not dig arnica from the wild. A. montana has declined sharply across Europe under grassland loss and collecting pressure and is protected in a number of countries, and several North American arnicas carry state-level protection. Buy nursery plants or seed, and divide from there.

Nutrition

Arnica has no nutritional role of any kind. It is not food, it must never be eaten, and its only home use is on the outside of the body.

There is nothing to say here in the usual sense, and that itself is the point worth stating plainly: arnica is not food and has no nutritional value to a person. It is not a bitter green, not a tea herb, and not a garnish. The whole plant contains helenalin and related sesquiterpene lactones, which are what make it useful on the skin and dangerous inside the body.

If you grow arnica, grow it in the medicine bed rather than the salad bed, and keep the dried flowers well away from your culinary herbs. Dried arnica heads look very like dried chamomile or calendula, and that is a mix-up worth designing your shelf to prevent.

In the kitchen

There is no culinary use for arnica, and this is a case where the absence matters: it is toxic eaten. The 'mountain tobacco' name comes from historical smoking of the leaves, which is not a practice to revive.

Arnica has no culinary use whatsoever. It does not belong in tea, infused honey, syrup, bitters, or a herbal liqueur, and no amount of tradition changes that. Its old common name mountain tobacco records that alpine herders once dried and smoked the leaves, and various European folk practices took it internally in small amounts — both belong to a period before anyone had measured what helenalin does to the heart and gut. Poisonings, including fatal ones, are documented.

The reason this is worth a section rather than a footnote is that arnica looks and dries exactly like plants you do eat. A jar of dried golden heads sits alongside chamomile and calendula and gets treated the same way; a jar of flowers steeping in oil looks like a kitchen ingredient. Keep arnica physically separate from the food shelf, label it, and if anyone in your household would ever reach for an unlabeled jar of dried flowers, label it twice.

Traditional & historical uses

The tradition is real and long. Arnica has been the standard European remedy for bruises, sprains, contusions and overworked muscles for at least five hundred years, applied to the skin as an infused oil, ointment, gel or diluted tincture compress. It is one of the very few folk remedies that made the jump into ordinary pharmacy shelves worldwide, and Germany's Commission E approved topical arnica for injuries and inflammatory conditions — listing both A. montana and A. chamissonis as the plant sources.

What modern evidence actually shows. The picture is genuinely mixed rather than either vindication or debunking. The most encouraging results are for osteoarthritis: a trial in hand osteoarthritis found topical arnica gel not inferior to ibuprofen gel, and a six-week knee osteoarthritis trial found it effective and well tolerated. For bruising and post-procedure swelling, results are inconsistent — a 20% arnica ointment beat placebo on laser-induced bruising but did not beat vitamin K cream. For delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), one trial found pain relief at 72 hours with no change in any marker of muscle damage, and others found nothing. A 2014 systematic review of topical arnica for pain, swelling and bruises concluded the trials were small, heterogeneous and methodologically weak; a broader 2024 review reached a similar verdict, that a fair amount of evidence supports use but negative trials sit alongside it. Honestly summarized: plausible, popular, partly supported, and not settled.

Homeopathic arnica is a completely different product and the two are constantly confused. Homeopathic arnica pillules at 30C have been diluted roughly 1060-fold, which is far past the point at which any molecule of the original plant remains — they are sugar. Trials of oral homeopathic arnica are mixed and the pooled evidence does not show it outperforming placebo. Whatever you conclude about the herbal preparation, none of it transfers to the pillules, and none of the pillules' safety transfers to the herb.

The cautions are serious and specific. Arnica is for topical use on unbroken skin only. Do not apply it to cuts, grazes, open wounds, mucous membranes, or around the eyes — absorption rises sharply through damaged skin. Never take it internally: helenalin is cardiotoxic and severely irritant, oral arnica has caused vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, arrhythmia, muscle weakness and death, and the FDA classifies it as unsafe for internal use. Prolonged or repeated topical use causes allergic contact dermatitis, and people sensitive to other Asteraceae — ragweed, chamomile, marigold, feverfew — cross-react often; patch-test a small area first. Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and use caution if you take anticoagulants. Keep flowers, tincture and infused oil out of reach of children and pets. History

A remedy of the European Alps for five centuries, known as mountain tobacco for the herders who smoked its leaves, praised by Goethe, and now declining in the wild - which is why cultivation and the North American meadow arnica matter.

Arnica belongs to the high pastures of central and southern Europe, and its medicine came from the people who worked there. Alpine herders and mountain guides treated the inevitable falls, knocks and strained muscles with the yellow flowers steeped in oil or spirits, and the plant picked up the name mountain tobacco from the habit of drying and smoking its leaves. It appears in the European herbal record from the sixteenth century onward, and Goethe is often quoted as having taken it for a heart complaint in old age — a use no modern source would endorse.

By the twentieth century arnica had become one of the small handful of folk remedies with a genuine industrial afterlife: gels and creams on pharmacy shelves in dozens of countries, a Commission E monograph in Germany, and a parallel career in homeopathy, where 'Arnica 30C' became one of the most recognized remedies in the world despite containing none of the plant.

That popularity has a cost. Arnica montana has declined sharply in the wild across its European range as flower-rich acidic grassland has been fertilized, drained or abandoned, and collecting pressure has grown alongside demand. It is protected in several countries and cultivation efforts have produced selections such as 'Arbo' bred specifically for growing rather than gathering. It is also why Arnica chamissonis, the North American meadow arnica, has become the practical species for growers: it does the same job, tolerates ordinary lowland conditions, and takes no pressure off a threatened alpine plant.

Troubleshooting

Almost every arnica failure is one of four things: soil too rich, soil too limy, drainage too poor, or summers too hot. Yellow leaves point at pH, collapse points at wet, and no flowers in year one is normal.

The plant declined and died within a season: the most common outcome, and usually rich soil, neutral-to-alkaline pH, or poor drainage — often all three, which is to say an ordinary good garden bed. Rebuild the site lean, gritty and acidic, or grow in a pot of ericaceous mix.

Leaves yellowing between green veins: chlorosis from soil that is too alkaline. Arnica is intolerant of lime. Test the pH, and if it is above about 6.5 move the plant rather than trying to acidify a whole bed.

Wilting although the soil is damp, with a soft brown crown: root or crown rot. Stop watering, improve drainage, pull compost mulch back and replace it with grit, and salvage any firm divisions into a raised, sharply drained spot.

Lush leafy growth, floppy stems, few flowers: too much nitrogen. Stop feeding entirely — this plant flowers best when it is a little hungry.

Seed never germinated: almost always because it was covered (arnica needs light), or sown without a cold period, or the seed was old. Surface-sow fresh seed after 2-4 weeks in the refrigerator, or sow outside in fall.

No flowers in the first year: normal. Expect a real harvest in year two or three.

Ragged holes in the rosettes overnight: slugs and snails, the main pest of arnica and worst on young plants. Clear their daytime shelter and hand-pick after dark.

It melted in July: heat and humidity. A. montana needs cool summers. Switch to A. chamissonis, give afternoon shade, and in the hot Southeast treat arnica as a container plant or skip it.

Growing across climates

Cool summers matter more than winter cold. Zones 4-8 on paper for montana and 3-8 for chamissonis, but the real map is elevation and summer heat: excellent in the mountain West and Pacific Northwest and the northern tier, poor in the hot humid Southeast.

Arnica's zone rating misleads people, because winter cold is not what limits it — summer heat and wet are. A. montana is generally rated zones 4-8 and A. chamissonis about zones 3-8, and both are properly hardy. What decides success is whether your summers stay cool and your soil stays sharply drained.

Zones 3-5 and the mountain West: the best conditions in North America. Cool nights, low humidity, naturally lean gritty soils. Meadow arnica is native across much of this ground and behaves like the wildflower it is.

Pacific Northwest and the northern tier: also very good, with the one caveat that winter wet kills more arnica than winter cold ever will. Raised beds and grit around the crown are the whole answer.

Zones 6-7 in the East and Midwest: workable with effort. Give afternoon shade, build the bed lean and gritty and acidic, and expect montana to be short-lived. Meadow arnica is markedly more forgiving here.

Zone 8 and the hot humid Southeast: the honest verdict is that this is not arnica country. Montana rarely survives a Gulf or Deep South summer, and even chamissonis struggles. If you want to try, use chamissonis in a large container of gritty lime-free mix, in morning sun with afternoon shade, moved somewhere cooler in high summer — and treat it as a short-term plant rather than a permanent patch.

Everywhere, the microclimate beats the map: a raised, gritty, acidic bed that never bakes and never puddles is what arnica wants, and it will forgive a lot of zone if it gets one.
